Parrot cut a blood feather. What to do for a quiet, not eating bird?

Hi, Yesterday we were clipping my parrots wings when we cut a blood feather. I wasn't aware of a blood feather was and I googled it. There was no serious bleeding just a hand full of blood but after a few hours we remove it with plyers. He hasn't been eating anything apples but do and is very quiet when we're in my room. He frequently talks and says hello and gives kisses. He's a Amazon bird . We're planing on carrying him to the vet on Friday when my parents don't have to work. What should do?

Thanks for reaching out about Kai and including photos. Typically birds deal with broken blood feathers and blood loss pretty well. Allowing to re-hydrate by offering water-rich vegetables and some fruit, and providing proper diet to replaced lost nutritions, is usually sufficient. If still recovering after a few days, something else is probably occurring. Besides a physical exam, a review of diet and husbandry practices is important.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Once the blood feather is removed, the body naturally seals off the area and cuts off the blood supply. He would have to do some severe damage to himself in order for it to bleed as much as it did. There's little chance that a bird would cause this much harm to itself, so I would not worry about it. These pulled blood feathers start to look normal after a week or so. If there are further concerns, then I'd recommend taking him to a vet for a consult. I hope that helps and all is well with Paco.

We pick at at a splinter until painful, then stop and wait, try again. Birds do the same thing with broken blood feathers. If not actively bleeding, leave alone and let Chloe work it out. Ouch poor birdie! It looks like she may have lost more than a few feathers, and yanking out healthy feathers can definitely cause bleeding and is very painful to your bird. If you have it on hand, styptic powder can be used to stop the bleeding on the skin. If you don't have that, corn or potato starch can be used as a substitute. Keep the area cleaned and dry, and if the bleeding continues, the area looks infected or badly wounded, or if Canela is in a lot of pain, seek veterinary care as soon as you can.

My finch has a broken feather that won't stop bleeding. What to do?

Thanks for reaching out about your finch and including photos. You need to grab the fractured feather shaft with tweezers and slowly gently pull out the quill. Pull along the length of the feather. If continues to bleed, provide some direct pressure to the bleeding area. Good luck.

I would very gently catch Sky and carefully check under her wings for any damage such as cuts. I imagine you won't find anything as like you say she has likely pulled out a blood feather. As long as you don't find anything I would don't monitor her for the next few days. If you find anything worrying I would have her checked by your vet.
