My budgie broke a blood feather. Should I remove it or see a vet?

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 1 month and 2 days old

My very young budgie broke a wing feather which bleed. The bleeding stopped quickly but he is new to me and young and I'm afraid trying to catch him will cause more damage. Is he better left alone or do I need to have the wing feather removed? Thank You. Concerned Mom

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach. It is recommended to remove a broken blood feather as it could potentially cause large amounts of blood loss if it breaks open again. If unsure of doing this yourself, I recommend contacting a veterinarian that treats birds. Thanks for reaching out about Blue and including a photo. The loss of a blood feather is not a concern as long as there is no active bleeding. Bird adapt to blood loss (per size of animal) better than mammals do, even though some bleeding can appear to be significant. This would be a good time to review diet to ensure that nutrients lost in the feather and bleeding are able to be replaced. If blood loss is significant, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Once the blood feather is removed, the body naturally seals off the area and cuts off the blood supply. He would have to do some severe damage to himself in order for it to bleed as much as it did. There's little chance that a bird would cause this much harm to itself, so I would not worry about it. These pulled blood feathers start to look normal after a week or so. If there are further concerns, then I'd recommend taking him to a vet for a consult. I hope that helps and all is well with Paco.

Thanks for reaching out about Chipper and including photos. You should monitor the growth of the next feather from that follicle. If it grows in rotated, there is a chance this might be a persistent problem. Then a veterinary visit is recommended to diagnose the condition, which might include blood work, a nutrition discussion and possible follicle biopsy. Often times it is a one time problem, where the feather was tweaked in the follicle and grew in abnormal. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about your finch and including photos. You need to grab the fractured feather shaft with tweezers and slowly gently pull out the quill. Pull along the length of the feather. If continues to bleed, provide some direct pressure to the bleeding area. Good luck.

Without knowing the name of the product, it cannot be determined if it is necessary. Usually, you don't want to medicate your pet or start a supplement without the advice of your veterinarian. It is possible Houdini broke a blood feather or injured himself causing bleeding. You will need to gently look under his wing. You can pluck a broken blood feather if you have done it before, otherwise leave it for your vet or a vet experienced in treating birds. Make an appointment to have Houdini examined. You can bring the water additive with you to discuss its use with your vet.

My budgie's wing is bleeding and shaking. Should I take her to a vet?

If he is continually bleeding, then it's best to get him to a vet as soon as possible, because they can't afford to lose too much blood. If the bleeding has stopped and he is eating/drinking OK, then you can wait for 24 hours and see if there is any improvement with how he holds his wing. Sometimes they initially will hold it like this and it will shake due to the pain and not a fracture. If it doesn't seem better after a day, then I would get it checked out by a veterinarian to see if there is any serious damage. I hope that helps and Rainbow gets better soon.
