Why does my parakeet have a reddish-black growth inside its beak?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | 7 years and 3 months old

Hello! My parakeet, 6 years old, has developed a thin reddish black growth that seems to be coming from the inside of his beak and splitting off. It's about 1/8 of an inch long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reaching out about Charlie. Oral growths are not uncommon in budgies, and are usually inflammatory. Removal through a mild surgical procedure is recommended. If left alone, these lesions can become infected or be bitten and bleed profusely. A veterinary visit is recommended.
Good luck.
