My budgie has a growth or something stuck on his beak. Should I worry?

Some crusting can happen when a bird is ready to mate, but that looks a bit more than that -- It is possible your bird has a respiratory issue going on, a fungal infection taking hold in the nostrils, or another type of infection/illness. It would be best to bring him to a vet to have the area flushed out and treatment started for any underlying infection. Separating him to a hospital cage that is kept warm and with easy access to food and water may also help to prevent the spread of any illness and to keep Ocean comfortable if your other parakeet is picking on him until you can be seen by your vet. You can also use a warm washcloth to try and remove any debris to make him more comfortable.

Thank you for your question, and thank you for the photo - I can see what you are talking about with the lump. It looks to me to be at the commissure (corner) of the mouth. The lump looks to be a bit crusty. There are a few things that this could be - there may be material stuck to the area or a tissue growth. The material may be food, or it could be exudate (material that is produced from infectious organisms such as bacterial infection). It would be less likely to be a growth based on Cody's age, but there still is a possibility that it could be a benign or malignant mass. I would recommend trying to clean the area to see if anything comes off of it, and if it does, please look at the skin underneath to see if it is intact or if there is any kind of blood or injury underneath. If there is injury or if the material does not come off, then I would recommend taking Cody to a veterinarian. They can perform an examination and make recommendations based on what is found. If they suspect it is an infection, they may recommend performing blood work or starting on a course of antibiotics. If it is a mass, they may recommend taking a sample of it to evaluate under the microscope. Unfortunately from your photos I can't tell very clearly what is going on with the beak. If the beaks are overgrowing or impeding the chicks' ability to eat or drink, then I would have a vet take a look and trim the beaks down so that they can grow back into a more normal shape. If there is a growth, swelling, or discharge, it could indicate an issue such as an infection or underlying problem which should be treated by a vet. If the babies are otherwise healthy, eating, growing and there is no discharge, etc, then just keeping an eye on the beaks may be fine, but if they continue to grow oddly or become problemsome to your birds, having a vet look is always best.

It's possible there is a yeast or another infection still ongoing, especially if her beak and cere are so flaky and there is buildup. Having your vet take another look and taking a sample to send off for testing or getting started on an anti-fungal may help resolve the problem. Making sure Little Blue is eating a healthy, balanced diet can also help ensure she's getting the right nutrition to help maintain a healthy body and combat any illness.

If you're seeing discoloration or growth on the beak itself or Rj is acting ill (not wanting to eat or drink, trouble breathing or eating, listless behavior, etc) in addition to the change, it would be smart to have a vet take a look to rule out any issues such as a bacterial or fungal infection causing it. Some foods and pellets can also cause staining of the beak or feathers, so checking to see if any fruits or vegetables given match the discoloration may alert you to what is causing it so you can remove it and offer other items in addition to her regular diet.

Although a picture of it would help to determine the underlying cause more specifically, this presentation could be either due to an infection or possibly to a mass which is creating some sort of obstruction and secondary infection. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration).
