My parakeet isn't eating. What should I do and what food can I give?

These days my parakeet is not eating for hours.His urge for eating food has been decreased.What should I do ? And what kind of good food can I give him ? Please help me

If Mithu is refusing to eat at all I would be concerned that he is ill. It would be best to bring him to a local vet for an exam to rule out issues such as illness, infection, parasites, nutritional issues, etc that could be causing him to feel ill and not want to eat.

If he checks out healthy and just doesn't like his food, a balanced seed and pellet diet is a good base diet that provides plenty of nutrients. You can then add in fruits and veggies as treats to help add some variety and balance things out.

    If treating for infections didn't help I would be worried that there is an underlying neurologic or muscular issue ongoing. Other problems such as parasites, underlying illness or malnutrition are other possibilities. It would be best to bring your bird back into the vet for additional tests including a neuro test, bloodwork, possible X-rays etc to help rule out more serious issues and get them treated.

    It sounds like he's getting lots of snacks, however adding in a balanced parrot diet (most pet stores carry them) that is a combination of nuts, seeds, and nutrition-balanced pellets should make up the majority of his diet. Fruits and veggies and snacks are great extras, but ensuring he has a balanced base diet can help prevent any nutritional deficiencies.

If Mitthu doesn't want to eat food he is normally interested in, it is always best to have him sen by a vet to make sure there isn't an issue such as illness or injury causing him to not want to eat. Watery stool could be due to the food he is eating, being given too many treats, parasites, or general GI upset. Removing any extras such as excess fruits and veggies for a few days may help clear up the stool, however if he continues to not want to eat or has watery stool, the vet is best. If he checks out healthy, then switching him to a balanced parrot diet (many pet stores will carry commercial feeds that are usually a mix of pellets and various nuts and seeds) can help encourage him to eat more. You can add in some fruits and veggies as treats to help keep him happy and his diet varied.

Just like people- birds can become picky eaters. We love to eat potato chips over our veggies, and many birds will enjoy millet over their regular diet! You may need to remove all the 'extras' to see if it will encourage Pepper to start eating his diet again, or mix a little millet in to his regular food (however some birds will pick out their favorites). If he's acting ill in addition to not wanting to eat his regular food, and isn't still improving as you mentioned, or he absolutely refuses even if all millet is removed, seeking vet care is always a good idea to rule out an illness or something such as GI upset that could be causing his preferences to be changed. Until you can get to the vet, keeping him warm, in a separated hospital cage, and with easy access to food and water can help.

These can be early indicators of illness or injury. Birds will normally eat small amounts throughout the day and are quite active. An exam with your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet would be recommended to diagnose illness or injury. In the meantime, clean and sanitize Muthu's cage, bowls, perches and toys. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Keep him war and as stress free as possible until he sees the doctor. You can soak pelleted food in a small amount of fruit juice to stimulate his appetite.

Millie needs to be physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime, keep her warm and as stress free as possible. Use a hand feeding formula and warm water to make a mash or paste that she may eat. You can also soak a pelleted diet in a small amount of apple juice to stimulate the appetite. Discuss payment plans or alternative financing options, such as CareCredit ( www.carecredit.com ), with the veterinarian or office manager. Ask friends and family to assist you financially if possible.

Hello, There is no magic food that causes instant health. I recommend feeding budgies a formulated pellet diet with fresh vegetables and fruit. My budgie is fluffed up, eating a lot, kicking food, and has a green beak. Is she sick?
In the second image, she definitely looks unthrifty and ill. Without a physical exam though, it is difficult to say for sure what is going on with her. If you can, transition from an all seed diet to a pelleted diet which is more balanced. Brands include Harrison's, Lafeber, Pretty Bird or KayTee Exact. You can still offer a small amount of a fortified seed mix as well as fresh fruits and vegetables to round out the diet.
