My Alexandrine parrot won't eat. What's wrong and what to feed?

I have a two months old alexandrine parrot. He was fine and active 2 days before but now he dosent want to have food. I usually feed him boiled and grinded chana dal(a kind of pulse) and he eats it normally and in a good amount, but from a week he dosent want to eat and runs here and there when he sees me making food for him so i make him feed forcefully with a syringe by holding his beak upwards. His poop also seems normal but sometimes watery. I am worried about him & dunno What to feed him.

If Mitthu doesn't want to eat food he is normally interested in, it is always best to have him sen by a vet to make sure there isn't an issue such as illness or injury causing him to not want to eat. Watery stool could be due to the food he is eating, being given too many treats, parasites, or general GI upset. Removing any extras such as excess fruits and veggies for a few days may help clear up the stool, however if he continues to not want to eat or has watery stool, the vet is best.

If he checks out healthy, then switching him to a balanced parrot diet (many pet stores will carry commercial feeds that are usually a mix of pellets and various nuts and seeds) can help encourage him to eat more. You can add in some fruits and veggies as treats to help keep him happy and his diet varied.

Why won't my Alexandrine parrot eat hand-feed? Is it weaning?

Alexandrines typically wean between 12 and 16 weeks of age but some may wean earlier. Continue to offer Blue handfeeding formula but don't force him. If he won't eat from the spoon, make sure he has a variety of foods and fresh water in his cage. Weigh him daily to make sure he's not losing weight. You can also make a mash of the handfeeding formula and leave that for him to eat.

My parrot is lethargic, not eating, and can't perch. What's wrong?

Unfortunately, those are all very vague symptoms of illness that can be caused by any number of things including infections, diseases, parasites, malnutrition, etc. It would be best to bring Mitthu to your local vet for a complete exam to try and find out what is wrong. They may suggest additional tests such as bloodwork or an X-ray to help find the problem. In the meantime, keeping him in a warm hospital cage that is separated from any other birds and with easy access to food and water in shallow dishes with low perches may help some until he can be seen by a vet.

Alexandrian parrot drinking more water, passing green stool?

Thanks for reaching out about Pipo and including photos. The greenish stool is probably due to poor nutrition and possible liver disease. A comprehensive avian profile should be performed to analyze the white blood count and organ functions. Also a test for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease is highly recommended. This is a virus, non-treatable, contagious to other birds. You need to get better nutrition into him, as apples are fiber and sugar. There are many commercially available baby bird feeding formulas, but as your veterinarian. Good luck.

My bird's stool has seeds, he's quiet & sleeping low. What's wrong?

If his behavior is unusual or any symptoms (such as changes to the stool and lethargic behavior) are worsening, seeking a vet visit in person is always best to rule out issues such as GI upset, illness, etc. Adding a little grit to the diet may also help better breakdown seeds in his food and allow him to digest/pass them more easily. Sometimes, parasites can look like seeds in the stool, so having a vet take a look and checking for any parasites may also be a good idea. As for fresh fruits and veggies, birds can sometimes be picky about what they eat. The best rule of thumb is to keep offering them until your bird finally gets curious enough to try it. He may find a new favorite!

My parakeet has diarrhea. How can I help my bird with loose droppings?

Discontinue the millet temporarily. If possible, transition him to a pelleted diet. Recommended brands include Harrison's, Lafeber, Pretty Bird, KayTee Exact or Roudybush. You can still give seeds, just limit the amount. Once the droppings normalize, supplement with fresh greens, vegetables, cooked grains, pastas and beans. Submit a sample of the droppings to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite or persistent loose droppings. Have him examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet if necessary.
