My budgie is fluffed up, eating a lot, kicking food, and has a green beak. Is she sick?

But they usually do not decrease eating, as calories needed to make heat. A darker green stool is often a sign of decreased appetite, increased white and clear urine is increased drinking. Millet is a poor diet as devoid of many vitamins and minerals and is basically the equivalence of potato chips. A wide variety of vegetables is needed, a plant based protein source (beans, legumes, tofu) and avian pellets are recommended. As he is likely ill, a veterinary visit is highly recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Provide heat support 24/7. Good luck.

In the wild, budgies eat a variety of seeds, fruits, berries and vegetation. Fruits, vegetables and greens should comprise approximately 25% of their daily diet. A diet of solely fruits and vegetables is not balanced or healthy. If you want to transition away from seeds, consider a pelleted diet which is much more balanced and healthy. The male is exhibiting signs of illness or stress, possibly diet related. Consider having him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose illness or injury.

You are correct in that the images appear to show an apparently healthy budgie. An exam with your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian would be recommended to diagnose any illness or injury. At the very least, Penny will get a clean bill of health. Clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, perches and toys. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Use paper towels on the cage bottom and change them daily. Offer a commercial pelleted diet supplemented with a small amount of a fortified seed mix and fresh greens and vegetables. Cooked foods, such as rice, beans and plain pastas, can also be offered in small amounts.

With an all seed or heavy seed diet, fatty liver disease is possible which will not respond to the medications. Nutritional deficiencies can cause issues with the feathers and beak, so if he's also having trouble eating, a vet visit wouldn't hurt to rule out any deficiencies or other issues that could be causing his problems. Making sure he's on a balanced diet can also help ensure he gets enough nutrition. Other snacks such as salad greens, apple slices, strawberries etc, are also easier for a budgie to eat and break down and can provide additional nutrition.
