My parakeet has a small eye, neck hole, and is sleepy. Is she sick?

Hi I just wanted to ask a quick question about my parakeet for the past few days I've noticed my budgie has a smaller eye than the other one, a hole in her neck and she's been sleeping alot she is paired in with another female in the same cage, if you can please help me figure out this situation I am having weather I should be concerned about her or not I would gladly appreciate it thanks

Thanks for reaching out about Blueberry. That one eye is smaller and a hole in the neck, means she needs to see a veterinarian. A smaller eye could be a ruptured cornea. Or is the other eye larger? That could be an infection. Her being sleepy is an indication that she is weak and can not hide her illness.
If is highly recommended you see a veterinarian sooner than later.
Providing supplemental heat in the 80-85 degree range might provide some comfort but is not a treatment.

    Difficult to tell from the picture but that is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.

    Without an exam it would be hard to say what her condition is and if it will worsen over time. It is best to have her examined by a local avian vet in your area or seen by an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) that can examine the eye and determine if it needs treatment or will progress over time.

    I am sorry but the picture is very blurry. It does appear that Sky has discharge around the eyes and beak. birds can get infections of the upper respiratory system and sinus cavity. I know it is not close but I would recommend getting her to a vet. If she does have an infection she need antibiotics and unfortunately you cannot get them over the counter. In the mean time I would try and keep her stress level down and monitor her closely for eating and drinking. Hope sky feels better soon

Those are general symptoms that Bibbie is not feeling well and may have an underlying illness. It would be best to seek veterinary care ASAP as this is a symptom of many possible issues and an exam is needed to help narrow down the cause. Until you can get to the vet, moving her to a warm hospital cage with easy access to food and water may help, however if she is completely listless seeking care is needed ASAP.

Thanks for reaching out about Eelu. It sounds as if she is sick and needs to see a veterinarian. If no avian veterinarian is available, a dog/cat vet is recommended. A bird with feathers fluffed, eyes closed and hanging by the beak seems too weak to perch or eat well. Providing supplemental heat might give some comfort but is not a treatment. Removing perches and placing a towel on the bottom of the cage will prevent falling. Good luck.

Unfortunately, those are all very general signs of illness so it would be best to bring Bujji to a local vet to try and narrow down what is causing his symptoms so he can be treated. Illness, infections, parasites, stress, nutritional issues, etc can all cause these general symptoms. Until you can get to the vet, keeping him in a low-stress warm hospital cage with easy access to food and water may help, as well as keeping him separated from other birds to avoid being picked on.

Those are all very general signs of illness in a bird. It would be a good idea to get Blue to a vet as soon as possible to try and determine what may be causing his symptoms. Until you can get to your vet, keeping him in a warm hospital cage with low/no perches and food and water that is easy to get in and out of may help.
