Sudden parakeet death: Is psittacosis a risk to my other bird or me?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

i have 2 parakeets and one has suddenly died. she was fine yesterday- food, water, etc. seemed active. found her tonight at the bottom of her cage dead. she seemed healthy but my main concern is psittacosis. my other bird seems fine, but given how sudden my bird died i want to ensure there's no chance it'll spread to me/other budgie.

My condolences on the loss of your bird. If you have concerns regarding Psittacosis, you can submit the body for PCR testing. Your other bird can be tested if necessary. An exam with your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian would be recommended anyway since birds are quite adept at concealing illness or injury until they are in serious condition.
