New budgie quiet, not eating/drinking. Is my bird sick or stressed?

Alright, so, I just got Frost yesterday and I am completely new to birds. Like, I have never, ever even held one or been close to one. I would like to know, is it normal for them to be so quiet? So far, I've only seen her twice, and I haven't seen her drink from her dish at all. Her feathers are all tight around her as well. She seems fine at times, but each time I go near her or if one of my family members does, she quickly huddles away. Im just worried that she is sick. Can I do anything?

Thank you for your question, and congratulations on your new pet! Budgies can be a very shy species, and this is often exaggerated when they are put into unfamiliar settings (such as a new house). I would recommend giving her a little more time to adjust, as long as she is eating and producing feces. You can find these at the bottom of the cage.
Alternatively, you can also take her to a veterinarian for evaluation. This is a good idea from a wellness perspective, as it will slow you to gather information about her baseline health, and your vet can determine whether Frost is ill or not. They can also provide you with basic information on husbandry and nutrition as well.

    I am sorry that this is happening to you and Tahani, and I am glad that you posted your question. I would agree with you that I am concerned about the decreased appetite and small amounts of fecal production, as these are often signs of illness in a bird. Since they are prey animals, they try very hard to act normally when they are around others, including their friends like you and your other bird. From the photos that you sent, it looks like she is fluffed and sitting low on her perch as well. At home, I would recommend increasing the heat in the room where she is living so she doesn't have to waste energy on staying warm.
    I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian and having her evaluated. They can look for signs of illness, such as an infection, and may prescribe medications for her. Please don't give Tahani any human medications, as many of these are harmful for our bird friends.
    I hope that this gives you a place to start, and I hope that Tahani feels better soon.

If you just acquired him 1-2 days ago, could be stress and not sleeping well at night. Provide supplemental heat support in the 80-85 F range to give support. If not eating or drinking, this is very serious as these small birds have little caloric stores to compensate. Providing supplemental heat in the 80-85 degree range might give some aid. A veterinary visit is highly recommended, and soon. Older budgieregars are prone to metabolic concerns (kidney, liver) and other problems. Ingested foreign bodies or toxicities are also common if allowed free roam. Good luck.

Is my new budgie quiet? How to safely clip a parakeet's wings?
It can take time for a new pet to acclimate to its new environment. Make sure she is eating. Birds are pretty good at playing with their food and not eating. The best way to monitor this is to look for the passing of feces. When you trim wings, it is best to use wire cutters and not scissors. This is to force you to observe each feather prior to clipping, and to notice if it is a blood feather or not. Don't clip if a blood feather. Wait oboe to two weeks for the feather to finish growing, then check it again. If you think Frost is too quiet, seek an avian veterinarian. They can probably show you the proper way to trim wings.

Poor little birdie! What a cutie too. It is quite possible he could have some dehydration or loss of energy due to his excursion, or could have become injured or caught some illness. If his lethargy continues, he seems to be sneezing frequently, he isn't eating well, or he seems puffed up/hunched over or is sitting on the floor of his cage then I would bring him into the vet for an examination.

Why aren't my new parakeets eating or drinking after 20 hours?
It can take a day or so for new birds to settle into their environment until they are comfortable enough to eat, drink and resume normal activity. I would make sure they are kept in a quiet, draft-free area to give them a chance to settle in, relax, and get used to things. If they still aren't eating or drinking (or you notice there aren't eaten seeds in their cup-- some birds may not want to eat while being watched at first) after more than a day, or you see visible signs of illness, a vet checkup is best.

Providing heat support can give some aid but is not a cure for illness. As a new bird, moving to a new home can be stressful for a young animal, and suppressing the immune system, allowing subclinical infections to manifest. Good luck.
