My new budgie is quiet, tired, and sneezing. Is he sick or nervous?

Unfortunately, these symptoms point to illness. A visit to your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet would be recommended. Birds are quite adept at concealing illness, so by the time they are showing symptoms, they are already quite ill. For now, clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Use paper towels on the bottom and change daily. Keep the cage away from strong drafts and keep your budgie warm and as stress free as possible until she sees the doctor.

Based on the condition of the environment that you are describing and the sneezing and nasal discharge your bird is having, I would be concerned about an upper respiratory tract infection. Lethargy and sleeping during the day (to conserve energy) are clinical signs of being sick, the question is why. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some support. Monitor fecal production by a total cage clean-out. Sick birds often act like they're eating but aren't. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Multiple possibilities include ingestion of foreign material (metal, fabric, wood, etc.), metabolic concerns (liver, renal), infections (viral, bacterial) and others. Good luck.

You should not bath your budgie actively, only provide a container with water at the bottom of the cage and he will bath himself if he wants to. keep an eye on that sneezing, if it doesn't resolve within 2-3 days- take him to the vet to get it treated.

The best thing you can do is have Loki examined by a veterinarian. When birds show signs of illness they can get very sick very quickly. Antibiotics may be needed. Respiratory discharge or secretions, difficulty breathing, quiet and lethargic are all indications of possible illness and should be check out by a veterinarian. Good luck.

If you just acquired him 1-2 days ago, could be stress and not sleeping well at night. Provide supplemental heat support in the 80-85 F range to give support.
