Why is my lovebird throwing up seeds frequently? Is it the bird sand?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I have a 14 year old peach faced lovebird, recently I noticed that he's been throwing up his seeds after he's been eating, it happens frequently. I use bird sand as his litter and remove it when it's hardened so I'm worried could it because of the sand. I'm really worried about him. What should I do?

Thanks for reaching out about Kiki. Ingested foreign bodies are not uncommon in birds, and ingested clumping litter can harden in the crop or lower gastrointestinal tract, but also consider other foreign bodies such as items that contain zinc or lead. These metals are soft and can lead to nausea. Metabolic disorders and infections are other possibilities. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan.
Good luck.
