My lovebird is very sleepy, weak, and has diarrhea. What's wrong?

Being weak and lethargic, are only general signs of illness and are not specific for any particular problem. It is often difficult to differentiate between loose stool and polyuria (increased urine), as they often pass both at the same time. This must be examined as the birds passes a bowel movement to identify well formed feces. A loose stool can be the result of an intestinal infection, liver disease, ingested foreign body (particle, toxin, other) and more. Increased urination can be due to increased water intake (behavioral, kidney or liver disease, diabetes (rare), environmental stresses (heat, breeding season, change in diet). Providing supplemental heat in the 80-85 F range, 24/7 can sometimes support the immune system. If the weakness continues, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Good luck.

Diarrhoea could be a quite severe sign in birds especially if associated with lethargy and weakness as you described. Gastrointestinal infections (caused by bacteria or parasites most commonly) usually are responsible for this presentation. Thanks for reaching out about Candy and Tweety. Heat support in the 80-85 F range can give comfort. With both birds ill, inhaled or ingested toxins, a virulent bacterial or viral disease are probable and a veterinary visit is needed ASAP, as birds have little reserves to fall back on. Good luck.

Are you providing supplemental heat, in the 80-85 F range? Do you have a feeling Nino is loosing weight? Try the above mentioned, but see your veterinarian. Good luck.

Unfortunately, those are all very vague symptoms that are common to several issues. Anything from illness to infection, parasites, etc may be the cause of Lala's symptoms. If he continues to show them, seeking veterinary care is best for an exam to figure out the cause. it is also a good idea to move him to a hospital cage that is kept warm with easy access to food and water and separated from other birds to allow him to rest until you can get to the vet.

He should be examined by your veterinarian or by a veterinarian experienced in treating birds. Lethargy, chronic regurgitation and loss of balance would be serious symptoms in a young bird. Given Tweety's age, he should be seen as soon as you can get an appointment. Birds are very good at hiding illness or injury until it is quite serious. In the meantime, keep him warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the vet. Do not allow him to fly and remove or lower perches to prevent injury from falls. Consider feeding a commercial handfeeding formula temporarily or soaked commercial pellets to get some food into him.
