My duck has a hurt foot and can't walk. What should I do for her?

I have a peckin duck female her foot is hurt and cant walk on it

Poor Lizzy! It would be best to remove her from the flock and thoroughly clean the foot and leg (as ducks love to get mud on their feet!) so you can check it for any visible injuries and wounds. If there are any wounds, keeping it clean and dry and using something such as Blu-kote can help while it heals. If you can't find any wounds, see swelling, or the foot looks badly infected, it would be best to have it checked out by a vet in person.

Keeping Lizzy separate from the flock until she is healed can help prevent the rest of the birds from picking on her. Keeping her confined with easy access to food and water while you treat the foot can also help reduce any further irritation to it while it heals. However, if it isn't improving or seems broken/badly injured, vet care is needed.

My duck has a swollen foot. Is it bumblefoot? Do I need to separate?

Hello. It certainly can be bumblefoot, but that is just a catch all description of any swelling/infection in the food of a bird. I do not see the need to separate them unless the male is just relentlessly chasing her around. A veterinarian can look at the foot, & if it is bumblefoot, the lesion can be opened & any of the thick, caseous material removed. My duck was pecked by a rooster and now can't walk. What should I do?

Thanks for reaching out about your duck. Hydrogen peroxide kills cells indiscriminately, good and bad, and should be stopped. This duck might benefit from systemic antibiotics, since topical medications do not penetrate deeply. A veterinary visit is highly recommended, ASAP. This can provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Provide some supplemental heat in the 75-80 F range, might help a little. Syringe offer food and water for calories and hydration. God luck.

My duck's neck is hurt. Is it broken or sprained? What should I do?

If the neck was broken, Puddle would likely have passed away, or be in a lot of pain or distress. If she has a wound or injury on her neck, it would be best to move her to an isolated hospital cage and to treat and clean the wound so it doesn't get infected. This can help her heal without the rest of the flock picking on her and making it worse. Once she is recovered, you can reintroduce her. I would also recommend adding in some other ducks so she has friends to stay safe with. If she has been badly injured, can't move, or is in severe distress, it is best to seek emergency care from your vet or an ER clinic so she can be seen right away.

My duck has a foot bruise from long nails. How do I treat and trim?

I wish you had taken a photo of her feet so I could assess the problem and decide whether there was a problem in the first place. As for a bruise, you should watch her leg and the bruise. It should go away by itself. If it gets bigger or starts to ulcerate or leak, you need to take your duck to a vet, preferably an avian vet. My quail has foot sores and can't walk. What's wrong and how to treat?

Your quail has developed a touch of pododermatitis which is essentially infection and swelling of the soft parts of the feet. It can occur due to standing in dirty areas, uneven areas or narrow perches. I would check your housing is appropriate and clean and also get some antibiotics to help treat the feet. If you contact a vet they may be able to prescribe you something to pick up, or may request to see the quail first.

The swelling may be due to trauma, infection, a bite or sting, tumor or allergic reaction. Ideally, Susie should be physically examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating domestic fowl. She may need antibiotics, pain medication, antihistamines or even lancing. Any treatment will depend on her diagnosis.For now, keep her warm and as stress free as possible until she sees the vet. Make sure she is able to eat and drink as well, even if you have to syringe feed her water and food.
