Is Drano safe for my pet bird? How to protect my canary from fumes?

Hi and thank you for your question, From your question it is clear that you are aware of the risks of exposing birds to various fumes and aerosols. There is no way of giving you an accurate answer without doing all sorts of tests and measurements. However, the rule of the thumb is - if YOU can smell it - it is bad for the bird. Sometimes even if you can't.. Try finding a different place for Ringo while using these substances (outdoors, stairway, balcony etc.)

I would definitely make sure the area you are painting in stays well ventilated and that you have some place that you can keep Ringo (living room or a room that won't be painted) while you do so. Keeping fans open, opening windows (depending on the weather conditions) in painted rooms for 24-48 hours, etc can help keep the area ventilated as well. Low VOC paints can also be less irritating on the respiratory tract. If you notice any signs that Ringo may be affected such as listless behavior, trouble breathing, etc, moving him to a well-ventilated area and/or seeking veterinary help is best.

You and containing Teflon or polytetrafluoroethylene are toxic to birds when used at home in the same room. If you will be using cookware with Teflon, then it would be best to separate Ringo to another room with a shut door so as to avoid the smoke. Even then, Ringo would be at risk of having toxicity from the Teflon. Look at the link below for more information. Thanks for reaching out about Ringo. He should not be in the vicinity of any aerosols or burning candles, near the kitchen or where fumes are. Canaries were originally used in the coal mines to warn miners of dangerous fumes, as they are much more sensitive. Wearing cologne or perfume should be acceptable, within limits, and after the scent has settled. Canaries can live 15-20 years, if healthy, proper diet and good genetics. As for loosing their voice after 5 years, no scientific evidence could be found to support this. Good luck.

I would recommend you consider moving the cage somewhere else. That is the most effective, easiest and safest way to prevent this. Have a good day!

That is pretty young for a canary and if they are not in a well-ventilated area, it certainly could be a potential causes. Cooking fumes, especially from products such as Teflon pans, can be toxic to birds, so moving the birds to an area that is better ventilated and away from the cooking area/vents is a good idea. Keeping the environment around your birds clean and dust-free can also help them stay healthier.

Thanks for reaching out about Buddy. Keeping good ventilation is important as bird's respiratory tracts are very sensitive to toxins (thats why canaries in coal mines). If breathing is impaired, a veterinary emergency visit is needed for oxygen support, anti-inflammatories, and possibly antibiotics. Teflon and other non-stick pans can release toxic substances when heated up to a high temperature, and can be fatal to birds. Monitor appetite and water consumption. Good luck.
