Why are my canaries dying young? Are cooking fumes or dust the cause?

I have lost two Canaries in the past 6 yrs. They both died at 3 yrs. of age. I was wondering if they are dying due to having a Floor Vent below them. My Roomer cooks and fries foods downstairs, and the fumes come upstairs. Under Ringo. The other day,, my husband swept above the Canary, over the Curtains, and a lot of dust was not caught. Are any of these things killing my birds. (Canaries)? Or, is it something else? I try to be so careful with them, but they are still dying for some reason.

That is pretty young for a canary and if they are not in a well-ventilated area, it certainly could be a potential causes. Cooking fumes, especially from products such as Teflon pans, can be toxic to birds, so moving the birds to an area that is better ventilated and away from the cooking area/vents is a good idea. Keeping the environment around your birds clean and dust-free can also help them stay healthier.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am so sorry for your loss. Veterinarians have known for years that non-stick, & other coated pans, when over heated, can off gas & produce fumes. Birds have such rapid respirations that they are uniquely sensitive to these gases. This is the reason canaries were used in coal mines as early detectors of carbon monoxide. It may not have been carbon monoxide, but one of the pans probably did produce a gas that killed your birds. I am very sorry.

My bird was exposed to toxic fumes from a hot pan. What should I do?

Thanks for reaching out about Buddy. Keeping good ventilation is important as bird's respiratory tracts are very sensitive to toxins (thats why canaries in coal mines). If breathing is impaired, a veterinary emergency visit is needed for oxygen support, anti-inflammatories, and possibly antibiotics. Teflon and other non-stick pans can release toxic substances when heated up to a high temperature, and can be fatal to birds. Monitor appetite and water consumption. Good luck.

How to protect my pet canary from cooking fumes near its cage?

Sorry to hear about Prittybird. Any chance of an inhaled toxin, such as near the kitchen and your cook with Teflon? Scented candles, air fresheners and other inhaled products can cause acute death. Other than that, a post mortem examination might give you better answers.

Is non-stick cookware safe to use around my pet bird or canary?

You and containing Teflon or polytetrafluoroethylene are toxic to birds when used at home in the same room. If you will be using cookware with Teflon, then it would be best to separate Ringo to another room with a shut door so as to avoid the smoke. Even then, Ringo would be at risk of having toxicity from the Teflon. Look at the link below for more information. Are scented products safe for my canary? Do they live longer than 5?

Thanks for reaching out about Ringo. He should not be in the vicinity of any aerosols or burning candles, near the kitchen or where fumes are. Canaries were originally used in the coal mines to warn miners of dangerous fumes, as they are much more sensitive. Wearing cologne or perfume should be acceptable, within limits, and after the scent has settled. Canaries can live 15-20 years, if healthy, proper diet and good genetics. As for loosing their voice after 5 years, no scientific evidence could be found to support this. Good luck.

What causes canaries to get sick or die while laying their eggs?

I'm sorry to hear your bird passed away. It is possible she was ill and had an underlying illness-- as birds are great at hiding being sick until it's too late sometimes, or there was a nutritional issue such as not enough calcium or nutrition that led to starvation or egg binding (a stuck egg in the body). Making sure your birds are getting a complete balanced diet and extra calcium can help prevent these issues, however if you have any other birds that are also acting ill, separating them to a hospital cage and seeking care in person is best.
