My cockatiel's beak keeps growing. Is it normal or a health issue?

If you are worried that Okamis beak is overgrown I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian so that they can assess it and trim it if needed. They will also be able to assess her mobility and comfort. They may suggest X-rays if there is any concern regarding her joints or bone structure and will be able to prescribe medications as needed.

Sometimes beaks can overgrow just due to a genetics thing, a beak that has sustained an injury to the growth plate, or even an infection of the beak that is causing it to grow improperly. It's good that you have a vet visit scheduled as that will help narrow down the causes and give you a solution. In some cases, the beak is just scissored and needs regular trimming to stay aligned properly. Keeping the beak trimmed and offering items to trim it down like you are doing is great. If Tahani is still able to eat and drink normally and seems otherwise healthy I wouldn't be too concerned before you get to the vet, however if it is causing her discomfort or trouble eating, trying to see your vet sooner for care is best.

Beak overgrowth can be caused by a number of things, and if the beak is continuing to have issues or strange coloration with it, it would be best to have it checked out by an avian vet in your area. Giving your bird access to cuttlebone or other items to wear down the beak with can also help prevent overgrowth, but ruling out any health problems first is best.

One cause of a sudden overgrowth of the beak in birds is liver problems. I am not sure when the last time that Lila had blood work performed, but that would be where I would recommend that you start. Another cause, given Lila's age, to consider would be arthritis in her jaw. This can be harder to determine depending on the severity of the changes. Sometimes it can be seen by your veterinarian by performing radiographs (x-rays) of the skull, but sometimes a CT scan may be required. I would recommend to start by having Lila evaluated by a veterinarian. They can perform a thorough examination, and see if they can appreciate any pain on manipulation of Lila's jaw. From there, they can perform the diagnostics as outlined above, and may have other recommendations based on their findings. As far as preventing the long beak growth, that will depend on the underlying cause. With cases of liver damage, often the growth can be slowed with treatments for the liver, and with jaw arthritis, birds are often more comfortable and will keep their beak a more appropriate length when the pain is controlled. Both of these treatments would need to be started, and monitored, by your veterinarian. Please do not give Lila any human medications, as many of them can cause harm to our feathered friends. As long as it is just a little overgrown and she can still eat well (can tell by having the brown or green part of the poop present as they can pretend to eat) there is not a rush to get into the vet. It will need to be clipped and shaped if it gets really long though. Sometimes this can happen if a bird is eating only seeds so try to see if Turtle can be convinced to eat a pelleted diet by pretending to eat it yourself often around her and some patience.

It appears that there is a malformation of your bird’s beak. This could be a congenital malformation or due to some type of injury or trauma. If your bird is still eating and drinking normally I would not be too concerned about it. Unfortunately from your photos I can't tell very clearly what is going on with the beak. If the beaks are overgrowing or impeding the chicks' ability to eat or drink, then I would have a vet take a look and trim the beaks down so that they can grow back into a more normal shape. If there is a growth, swelling, or discharge, it could indicate an issue such as an infection or underlying problem which should be treated by a vet. If the babies are otherwise healthy, eating, growing and there is no discharge, etc, then just keeping an eye on the beaks may be fine, but if they continue to grow oddly or become problemsome to your birds, having a vet look is always best.
