My active canary threw up food and stretched her neck. Is she okay?

Without more context it is hard to say. He could just be stretching, excited, or adjusting his crop after eating so that food can be more easily digested (these are all normal behaviors.) If he is in discomfort, showing other signs of illness, vomiting, etc, then having a vet take a look is best as those are all signs that it is not normal behavior.

You may just be seeing a full crop, which is easy to see on birds without feathers, that will expand like a balloon when they are full and fed, and slowly decrease in size as they digest their food. If the mother was just feeding them something yellow, that can be what you are seeing. If the swelling does not go down over time (IE with digesting the food) then I would be worried something could be stuck in the crop or outside of it, and bring them to a vet for an exam. Make sure you are feeding mom a balanced diet for canaries in order to ensure she and the babies grow healthy. Egg yolk is probably not the best option over a balanced diet.

Some birds can do that as a normal behavior when food is adjusted in their crop while digesting. You may see them swallow and look like they're going "aaah" for a moment and then return to normal activity. Making sure Dotty is on a balanced diet that is easily digestible can help. Some parasites may also cause crop issues, so using a dewormer to clear any suspected parasites may also help. If you suspect there may be something stuck in her crop or throat such as a foreign body or obstruction, having a vet take a look in person and removing it is best. If the behavior doesn't seem to bother her and she is otherwise normal and healthy, I would just keep an eye on her and make sure she continues to eat, drink, etc. You can check her crop to see if it is normal looking, isn't oozing anything, or isn't swollen or seemingly painful. If she does begin to act ill, is actively gasping or gagging and in distress, or seems to have an issue with her crop, vet care should be sought ASAP.

It's possible you could be overfilling his crop, causing him to regurgitate up some of the extra food. Checking his crop (located on the neck, it will feel like a little balloon when full, or be visible if his feathers haven't grown in) can alert you if he's full or not. If it's full, waiting a bit to feed him again or decreasing the amount fed and just feeding more often can help. If his crop is always full, or he is unable to keep any food down, having a vet take a look to rule out issues such as obstruction or illness is best.

This can be bacterial, yeast, other fungi, an obstruction or other concern. If too cold, they have difficulty digesting food. Food needs to include vegetables (wide variety), plant proteins and should not be seed only. If syringe feeding, ensure that food is the proper temperature, as too hot can scald crop and too cold decreases motility. Provide 24/7 heat support in the 80-85 F range. A veterinary visit can provide a good diagnostic/treatment plan. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear about Nala. I would be concerned that there may be an issue with his crop, such as a hole in it, something causing an obstruction, illness or infection, or other issue, especially if you cannot fill it all the way or he vomits up any extra. Having a vet take a look in person is best to try and see if there are any visible issues with it that can be found. Until you can get to your vet, feeding smaller meals more often may help Nala get enough food to keep growing without overfilling his crop and making him ill.
