My canary finished meds but is still puffed and sleepy. Is she recovering?

If you've finished the medication, it is a good idea to schedule a recheck with your vet. They can help determine if Vic has improved enough (it sounds like he has been improving) and if he'll need any additional care or medication. Continuing to keep his cage warm and comfortable, and making sure he stays eating and drinking and active is also a good idea to monitor his progress.

Not all antibiotics work on all bacteria. Were any cultures performed? Short 10-15 minute bouts in the steamy bathroom might relieve some congestion. Diet should be reviewed to provide adequate vitamin A. Ensure that Sunny is away from the kitchen, especially when cooking or other aerosols or aromatic sources. If the sneezing does not clear, diagnostic tests should be performed to determine a cause. Good luck.

Thanks for your question about Hazlet, and thank you for the photos - they are very helpful. You are correct in that Hazlet is more fluffed than a normal canary should be. You are also correct that this can be a sign of illness (it is part of what we call the "sick bird posture" - this also includes sitting low on the perches or sitting on the ground, closing the eyes, tucking the head, faster breathing). It can also be a sign of stress, or being cold as well. I would recommend that you evaluate where the cage is located - is it near a window, near an outside wall, or near a door? Is the temperature in your house 70F or below - if so, I would recommend increasing the temperature. Now that it has been two days since you posted (I apologize for the delay, by the way), if this has continued and the temperatures and cage location are appropriate, it may be time for a veterinary visit. Often it can take a few days for a bird to get comfortable in their new environment, but if it is still going on now, I would recommend taking him in to see a veterinarian. They can perform a physical examination, and depending on the findings, may have treatment recommendations for you. They can also evaluate the husbandry/care/diet for Hazlet and may make recommendations that are tailored to you and to him. Poor Fudge! If he is still not improving after a course of antibiotics, it would be best to bring him back to your vet for another exam as well as some additional testing. A chest X-ray or bloodwork may be beneficial in seeing if the infection is still present, or if there is something else ongoing that also needs to be treated. It is also a good idea to separate Fudge into a hospital cage so that your other bird doesn't pick on him and stress him out, and so that any contagious illness isn't spread. Keeping the hospital cage warm, quiet, and with easy access to food and water can also help keep Fudge comfortable while he recovers.

It looks like your vet gave you an antibiotic and an anti-fungal medication. Without knowing what exam/diagnosis was given, it would be hard to determine if this is correct, but these are medications used for general illness in birds so if your vet suspects a general infection or illness, they would be given. If Sunny isn't improving on the medications, additional examination with your vet is best to try and pinpoint the causes.

it sounds like you are already working with your vet to do everything possible for Yellow. If she's having trouble getting around at all, switching out regular perches with flat shelf perches or perches kept low to the ground, and adding in shallow dishes for food and water that are easy to get in and out of may help her get around easier and keep her eating and drinking. if she continues to worsen, bringing her back to the vet for palliative care may be helpful in making her more comfortable.

I would have expect it to get better on these antibiotics, in that case there is a very good chance that it's a fungal infection rather than a bacterial infection, you need to take her back to the vet ASAP and ask him to try an anti fungal treatment.
