Canary picking after mite treatment: Is this normal or a problem?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Canary | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 1 day old

My canary has just been given mite treatment as my zebra finch has been diagnosed with a bad case of mites. My Canary is now excessively picking at itself as if itchy. Is this common after treatment?

Thanks for reaching out about your birds. Itching could increase if there are lots of dead mite or the mites are active. There is also the chance that it is having a bad reaction to the topical medication. The dose needs to be carefully measures for the weight of the animal. Bathing could help remove some of the topical.
Good luck.
