Why is my budgie sneezing, timid, and shaking feathers on meds?

Unfortunately, these symptoms point to illness. A visit to your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet would be recommended. Birds are quite adept at concealing illness, so by the time they are showing symptoms, they are already quite ill. For now, clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Use paper towels on the bottom and change daily. Keep the cage away from strong drafts and keep your budgie warm and as stress free as possible until she sees the doctor.

Your veterinarian is right - seeing discharge (the brown stuff) around the nose in combination with the sneezing is suggestive of upper respiratory disease (nose, windpipe). Often in budgies, it is common for them to become quiet, and can get stressed, with medication administration as handling can be hard on them. If you haven't seen a great deal of improvement since starting the medication, I would recommend contacting your veterinarian. They may want to see Biba an additional time to repeat their examination and evaluate if the lungs sound better, or if the discharge has improved. If it hasn't, they may decide to switch antibiotics. At home, I would ensure that Biba is kept warm, as birds' body temperatures are higher than ours. Also make sure her environment is humid, if she will tolerate it. You can do this with a humidifier, or by taking her into the bathroom when you take a shower. This can help to break up any discharge and material that may be present in her nose, airways, and lungs. Thanks for reaching out about Bubu. The most likely cause of the sneezing and clinking is aspiration of the medication. It is rare for leg paralysis to be caused by an infection. Has she recently laid an egg or can she be egg bound? Trauma to the lower spine or weakness are other possibilities. Supply heat support in the 80-85 F range can give comfort. Offer water and food through a syringe. A re-visit to the veterinarian is recommended. Good luck.

Poor little birdie! What a cutie too. It is quite possible he could have some dehydration or loss of energy due to his excursion, or could have become injured or caught some illness. If his lethargy continues, he seems to be sneezing frequently, he isn't eating well, or he seems puffed up/hunched over or is sitting on the floor of his cage then I would bring him into the vet for an examination.

It looks like your vet gave you an antibiotic and an anti-fungal medication. Without knowing what exam/diagnosis was given, it would be hard to determine if this is correct, but these are medications used for general illness in birds so if your vet suspects a general infection or illness, they would be given. If Sunny isn't improving on the medications, additional examination with your vet is best to try and pinpoint the causes.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do from home without veterinary care if she is already showing signs of illness. However there are some things that may help make her more comfortable to hopefully make it until your vet appointment. Keeping her in a small hospital cage that is kept warm can help with body temperature regulation. Perches should be low to the ground or removed completely, and soft bedding placed at the bottom of the cage in case she falls. Having food and water (if she is still eating on her own) in shallow dishes she can get in and out of even if weak is best. If she's not eating or drinking, you may need to make a slurry of baby bird food and water and drop feed it to her to help keep her energy up. Otherwise, monitoring her and any changes in her symptoms can help when your vet is able to see her.

Wheezing and respiratory clicking sounds are an indication of a respiratory infection, necessitating the need for systemic antibiotics.
