My budgie is sick, fluffed, nasal discharge. No avian vet, what to do?

I am sorry Pearl is not feeling well. I would recommend taking Pearl to the vet for a good physical exam. My concern is that birds can get upper respiratory infections and sinus issues. If the nasal passage is blocked a vet can usually flush the sinus and use antibiotics to help. Hopefully Pearl is not sick but I would recommend having a vet look at Pearl to be on the safe side. If you are seeing discharge from Pegasus' nose or he is having trouble breathing, it is possible he has a respiratory infection ongoing that needs to be seen and treated by a vet to get him feeling better. Until you can get to the vet, keeping his nose clear of debris with a clean washcloth, and keeping him warm and eating and drinking may also help.

Depending on the signs he is showing, ''cold'' is very likely compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or eventually to a chronic rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics are usually required needed. If you have many budgies try to isolate the sick one and do not expose him to excessive cold or hot temperature. Unfortunately, these symptoms point to illness. A visit to your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet would be recommended. Birds are quite adept at concealing illness, so by the time they are showing symptoms, they are already quite ill. For now, clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Use paper towels on the bottom and change daily. Keep the cage away from strong drafts and keep your budgie warm and as stress free as possible until she sees the doctor.

Thanks for reaching out. Antibiotics in the water are never a proper treatment, as you have no control over dosage. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give aid. You need to find a veterinarian with avian experience, try the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV.org) as they have a find-a-vet area. They probably did not die from getting cold, but probably didn't help. They need to be seen ASAP and given systemic antibiotics and dosed appropriately. If not eating, need to be syringe fed as young birds have no energy reserves. See a veterinarian ASAP. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Bella. Nasal aspergillosis would be a concern. A deep nasal fungal culture should be submitted, and tested for sensitivity to anti-fungals. Nasal flushes could help dislodge the rhinoliths (nasal plugs). Steam treatments might also help keep nasal passages open. Still, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.

Regurgitation can be caused by multiple things: ingestion of toxins or heavy metals (lead or zinc), liver or kidney disease, stomach infections or inflammation, gastrointestinal obstructions and more. Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range to give aid. Monitor appetite and activity. If symptoms continue or worsen, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.
