My budgie has one foot. How can I make her cage safe and accessible?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Female

Hi! I have a baby budgie that was born without a foot on one of her legs, she’s having trouble getting around the cage and balancing herself, her leg is also getting scraped and I’m really worried, any advice for what I should do?

Thanks for reaching out about Pixie and including a photo. Parakeets are generally light enough to survive on on foot but perches need to be established to allow a grip well. Flat platforms can also be used to rest the foot. If a wire bottom cage, a soft towel on the bottom with food and water bowls within reach.
Good luck.
