My budgie has one foot. How can I make her cage safe and accessible?

Ouch! That does sound like she's injured her foot. Until you can get to the vet, providing some low, flat perches that are easier to stand on (like a platform rather than having to curl her toes around it) and food and water dishes she can easily climb in and out of may help her relax the foot a bit and maintain her balance easier. Keeping her warm and preventing her from picking at or chewing on the foot can also help. If she's housed with other birds, moving her to a hospital cage to avoid being picked on is also a good idea.

Ouch! Those feet should be checked out by a vet and some blood tests run to make sure there isn't a nutritional deficiency or other illness causing the foot problem. If your bird checks out OK, then it may be a genetic deformity that will be there for life. Birds that have trouble perching or getting around may do better with large, flat perches, or flat shelf-like platforms so they can rest their feet and move around without falling off. Fungal infections usually affect the respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts and not neurologic issues. Arthritis or articular gout are possible and radiographs are recommended to assess. Anti-inflammatories could help relieve discomfort but blood work should be taken prior to long term medications. Removing perches or providing broad platforms and climbing ladders, could make perching more comfortable for birds with disabilities. Good luck.

Keep an eye on her. If she will allow, you can clean it daily with a mild antiseptic cleanser. Provide perches of different shapes, textures and thicknesses to condition her feet. Having only round perches of one size can lead to sores on the feet and overgrown nails.

It is absolutely not normal for a bird to lose toes. You don't mention how this happened, but some common reasons why this can happen is trauma from getting fragile little toes stuck between bars of the cage, bite wounds from a cagemate, or even from things like infection or cancer. It is best to set Charley up on the bottom of her cage with a soft blanket, plenty of food, and fresh water. She may have a hard time gripping her perches. Keep them very low in the cage (like 2 inches from the bottom) or remove them completely and try rolling small towels into little "ground perches" until you can get Charlie in to be examined by a veterinarian who will perform a full physical examination, discuss husbandry (including cage setup), and may recommend bloodwork. You should wrap the perches with some soft material so it is easier for him to perch, if the foot is not badly hurt it will heal within several days, if it is badly hurt you need to take him to an avian vet specialist to get it treated.

It is best to move Robin to a separate hospital cage to allow the foot to begin to heal without being picked on by other birds.
