My bird is suddenly weak, can't fly, and has a weak neck. What to do?

I woke up today and my bird was flapping its wings. I took him out of the cage and it had a weak neck, like he was still alive but he was like really weak he couldn't fly and his legs were weak to.

Hello. I am very sorry to hear that Blue is having such trouble. This actually sounds very serious to me and I would urge you to take Blue to a veterinarian as soon as possible. I wouldn’t wait, since birds can deteriorate and die very quickly and Blue already sounds quite unstable. I’m sorry to relay this news and wish I had an easy solution for you. In the meantime, please keep Blue warm and quiet in a small cage or box. If he’s alert enough to eat, offer whatever he wants or is willing to eat. Best of luck.

    Ideally, Blue should be seen by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating birds to diagnose illness or injury. You may need to force feed him if he continues to not eat and lose weight. If you don't have experience force feeding or syringe feeding, contact your vet or local breeders who may be able to teach and assist you. Keep a variety of foods available at all times. This can include a seed mix, millet sprays, commercial pellets and a mash made from the hand feeding formula. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible.

Those are all very general signs of illness in a bird. It would be a good idea to get Blue to a vet as soon as possible to try and determine what may be causing his symptoms. Until you can get to your vet, keeping him in a warm hospital cage with low/no perches and food and water that is easy to get in and out of may help.

Thanks for reaching out about Blue. Laying down and being quiet is not normal for baby birds. A veterinary visit should be scheduled. Provide supplemental heat in the 80-85 F range, which might give some assistance as baby birds have difficulty with thermoregulation. Good luck.

It would be best to bring your bird to a local avian veterinarian, especially if he has been ill for a few weeks. it's possible that an underlying illness, neurologic issue, muscular disease, stroke or other problem has occurred that needs to be examined and treated as needed. In some cases birds may not recover fully, and you may need to adjust your bird's environment to help him get around a little easier, such as adding in flat platform perches or changing access to food and water.

Hello. Your bird is sick, but there is no way to diagnose the problem in this forum. It may be infectious, metabolic, parasitic or even neoplastic. You need to have Blue examined as soon as possible, but until them make sure he is kept as warm as possible. Increasing the room temperature to about 80 degrees will help. While it is unclear what is exactly going on, this sound serious as it may mean that Heather is very weak due to whatever disease is affecting her. This warrants a veterinary evaluation as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to proceed with a proper examination and a formal diagnosis so that therapy can be started. I am hoping for the best!
