Why are pet birds so sensitive to smoke, sprays, and perfumes?

Aerosol is bad for birds, but only if it's used in close-quarters. If you are in a separate room when using the product and the door stays closed, then there is little to no chance it will be a problem for your bird.

As long as you left the room immediately and he wasn't directly exposed to the smoke, he should be fine. Make sure to air the room out well, wash your hands before you handle him again and keep him away from any nicotine products in your house, nicotine can kill your bird. Signs of nicotine poisoning include: twitching, excitedness, panting, salivation, vomiting, increased heartrate, collapse, coma and cardiac arrest.

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Most of the time if we're going to see a bird get sick from exposure to fumes, those symptoms show up pretty quickly. Often we'll see respiratory distress within the first hour. So, if he's still acting completely fine, you're probably in the clear. However, I'd recommend making sure he's in a well-ventilated non-stressful environment and keep a close eye on him for the rest of the day. Hope this helps!

Thanks for reaching out about Buddy. Keeping good ventilation is important as bird's respiratory tracts are very sensitive to toxins (thats why canaries in coal mines). If breathing is impaired, a veterinary emergency visit is needed for oxygen support, anti-inflammatories, and possibly antibiotics. Teflon and other non-stick pans can release toxic substances when heated up to a high temperature, and can be fatal to birds. Monitor appetite and water consumption. Good luck.

Veterinarians have known for years that non-stick, & other coated pans, when over heated, can off gas & produce fumes. Birds have such rapid respirations that they are uniquely sensitive to these gases. This is the reason canaries were used in coal mines as early detectors of carbon monoxide. It may not have been carbon monoxide, but one of the pans probably did produce a gas that killed your birds. I am very sorry.

The staining around the nostrils (not noticed on the photos) could be the result of inhalation of dust, smoke or other particulate matter during cooking or other times. Bird's respiratory systems are very sensitive and inhalation of cooking smoke or other products can be potentially acutely fatal. Removing birds from the vicinity when cooking is important, especially if cooking with Teflon. Good luck.

You should keep your vent fan on and try to open windows in your kitchen to provide more ventilation.
