Why did my birds die? Could it be toxic fumes from non-stick pans?

Thanks for reaching out about Buddy. Keeping good ventilation is important as bird's respiratory tracts are very sensitive to toxins (thats why canaries in coal mines). If breathing is impaired, a veterinary emergency visit is needed for oxygen support, anti-inflammatories, and possibly antibiotics. Teflon and other non-stick pans can release toxic substances when heated up to a high temperature, and can be fatal to birds. Monitor appetite and water consumption. Good luck.

That is pretty young for a canary and if they are not in a well-ventilated area, it certainly could be a potential causes. Cooking fumes, especially from products such as Teflon pans, can be toxic to birds, so moving the birds to an area that is better ventilated and away from the cooking area/vents is a good idea. Keeping the environment around your birds clean and dust-free can also help them stay healthier.

Sorry to hear about Prittybird. Any chance of an inhaled toxin, such as near the kitchen and your cook with Teflon? Scented candles, air fresheners and other inhaled products can cause acute death. Other than that, a post mortem examination might give you better answers.

You and containing Teflon or polytetrafluoroethylene are toxic to birds when used at home in the same room. If you will be using cookware with Teflon, then it would be best to separate Ringo to another room with a shut door so as to avoid the smoke. Even then, Ringo would be at risk of having toxicity from the Teflon. Look at the link below for more information. There are many possible causes of sudden death, but if you've had this happen twice in a row, some sort of toxic exposure would be my biggest concern. Something infectious would be another possibility. If your parakeets have access to flying around your house, then there would be many possibilities - but if they stayed in their cages, I would be looking for a toxic exposure they could come in direct contact with. Newspaper lining the cage (the ink can be harmful if the birds chew on it), moldy food, unclean water, etc. I recommend carefully cleaning everything you can, replacing anything that can't be well cleaned, making sure you're using safe substances in the cage, and when in doubt, you could consult with either the pet store (about your habitat) or your vet. Hopefully you don't experience the loss of another bird - but if it were to happen again, I recommend promptly bringing the bird in to a veterinarian for a necropsy (the animal version of autopsy). By doing a visual exam, and potentially getting tissue samples of different organs for analysis, your vet may be able to determine the cause of death, which will hopefully help prevent any further issues! You should keep your vent fan on and try to open windows in your kitchen to provide more ventilation.

As long as the pans are in good condition (no scratches, etc) and your birds are not kept in the kitchen, it should be OK to use. Keeping your birds in a well-ventilated area away from the kitchen when cooking or using the pans can help keep them safe.
