My bird's leg is broken, can't stand. Will she heal without a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

My bird flew out of her cage and I couldn't find her. I find her today eventually with her leg caught on a string. I cut it off but now she cannot stand on that leg. Is it broken? Is it disloscated? I have her on the bottom of her cage on a soft shirt with food and water to reach. A vet is very expensive, can she heal on her own? I'm very worried .. :(

Unfortunately Pearl is going to need to be seen by a doctor, and very soon. Budgies can get dehydrated very quickly. Be sure to monitor as closely as possible of any changes and let your doctor know as soon as you can.

  • Unfortunately there is no way to know without seeing your bird and taking X-rays whether or not the leg is broken. If you can't afford an exam, you'll have to support her as best you can with fresh food and water, and a place to perch easily, and hope for the best. If you take her in, at least you'd be able to get pain medication for her even if the leg is not repairable.
