My bird was on fly paper, now has crusty eyes & losing feathers. Help!

Thanks for reaching out. First, providing heat support in the range of 80-85 degrees, as loss of feathers means loss of insulation. Less insulation means heat loss and more calories expended to stay warm. Next, the glue needs to be removed through warm baths and mild soaps, such as Dawn dish soap. Work on small areas so as not to greatly stress her. Maintain good nutrition as lots of calories needed to grow new feathers. Good luck.

Hello. So sorry to hear that your parrot is having this issue. I strongly suggest you get her to an avian veterinarian for an examination. It sounds like she is having some issues seeing - she may be going blind. You need to have her vision checked with a vet this is competent with working on birds. Hello! There are several issues that might be going on with your bird. Mites are a common cause of feather loss on the face. There are certain bacterial and fungal infections that can cause this as well. I noticed that your parakeet also has a cagemate - is it possible that the other bird is over-preening this bird? The only way to determine the cause of the issue is to visit your veterinarian - preferably, a vet that is comfortable treating birds, or a bird-specific vet. The vet will likely take feather and skin samples from your bird and look at them under the microscope to try to determine the cause. There isn't much that you can safely do at home to treat mites, bacteria, or fungi, so visiting your vet is the best way to get your bird the treatment he needs. Best of luck!

It would be hard to say as those are both very general signs of potential illness. It could be that Lucy is cold or had some food stuck to her beak, has nasal discharge from an illness, or is experiencing another underlying issue. Moving her to a warm spot with easy access to food and water and cleaning any crusting may help, however if these symptoms continue or worsen, seeking veterinary care in person ASAP is best to have her examined and treated for health issues.

Morgy does look in pretty bad shape! I would recommend seeking care from a local vet ASAP as he looks like he doesn't feel very great, and his feathers look very wet and dull. This cold be caused by any number of things including poor nutrition, parasites, illness, infections, etc, so it's important to see a vet in person so they can examine him, find the cause, and start on treatment. If he's housed with any other birds, it is smart to move him to a separate hospital cage that is kept warm, quiet, and with easy access to food and water so that he can relax some until you can get into your vet.

You can put an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Birdy to keep her from scratching the spot - googling how to make a bird sized one with a paper plate is a great at-home thing you can do, however with the severity of that injury and how rapidly it is spreading, I would seek out a veterinary exam in person ASAP. It is possible there is an infection, or other nutritional/disease process going on that requires additional treatment such as flushing the affected site, giving antibiotics, etc, so seeking vet care is best.

Thanks for reaching out about Eelu. It sounds as if she is sick and needs to see a veterinarian. If no avian veterinarian is available, a dog/cat vet is recommended. A bird with feathers fluffed, eyes closed and hanging by the beak seems too weak to perch or eat well. Providing supplemental heat might give some comfort but is not a treatment. Removing perches and placing a towel on the bottom of the cage will prevent falling. Good luck.
