My bird's feather is bleeding. Is it a blood feather or injury?

Thanks for reaching out about Penny and including pictures. The photos are a bit blurry and a red stain can not be identified. One of the more common causes of red stains, is a broken blood feather and minor bleeding. Most birds will take care of this themselves. If you believe your bird is sick, it is important to take her to a veterinarian. By the time they appear ill, it can be quit advanced. Good luck.

I would very gently catch Sky and carefully check under her wings for any damage such as cuts. I imagine you won't find anything as like you say she has likely pulled out a blood feather. As long as you don't find anything I would don't monitor her for the next few days. If you find anything worrying I would have her checked by your vet.

Monitor Budgie for any indication of discomfort or pain, monitor appetite. Try applying a warm compress to see if can shrink mass. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Chloe. This is most likely a broken blood feather, possibly from night fright. This situation should be thought of like use having a splinter. We pick at at a splinter until painful, then stop and wait, try again. Birds do the same thing with broken blood feathers. If not actively bleeding, leave alone and let Chloe work it out. If starts bleeding, a veterinarian is recommended. Good luck.

Max shouldn't be bleeding just from moving around, and if it happens repeatedly in the same spot, or doesn't stop bleeding, I'd be concerned. It is a good idea to have him checked out by a local vet to make sure there isn't an injury there such as a broken blood feather, an abscess under the skin that is opening up when jostled, or a wound on the skin from parasites, stress picking or other injury. If he is bleeding at home, you can use something such as a little cornstarch to stop the bleeding, and then gently clean the area with a warm washcloth to remove any dirt or debris so you can check for wounds.
