My African Grey parrot is stressed by my cats. Can they live safely?

As long as the pans are in good condition (no scratches, etc) and your birds are not kept in the kitchen, it should be OK to use. Keeping your birds in a well-ventilated area away from the kitchen when cooking or using the pans can help keep them safe.

You and containing Teflon or polytetrafluoroethylene are toxic to birds when used at home in the same room. If you will be using cookware with Teflon, then it would be best to separate Ringo to another room with a shut door so as to avoid the smoke. Even then, Ringo would be at risk of having toxicity from the Teflon. Look at the link below for more information. Thanks for reaching out about Buddy. Keeping good ventilation is important as bird's respiratory tracts are very sensitive to toxins (thats why canaries in coal mines). If breathing is impaired, a veterinary emergency visit is needed for oxygen support, anti-inflammatories, and possibly antibiotics. Teflon and other non-stick pans can release toxic substances when heated up to a high temperature, and can be fatal to birds. Monitor appetite and water consumption. Good luck.

The short answer is yes. But there are a lot of factors to consider before putting birds into an outdoor aviary. Primary is whether, in some areas it may get too cold during certain times of the year for Greys to live comfortably. He can potential he be a factor in some areas and sprinkler or misting systems may need to be incorporated into the aviary. Birds in outdoor aviary's are also more susceptible to the spread of disease from wild bird populations and insects. I recommend speaking to aviculturists or avian veterinarians local to you to get an idea of the challenges of housing birds outdoors near you. It won't make your cat forget about them, thats for sure. However, a different cage may be more protective for the birds. Ideally, you might consider keeping the birds cage in a room that is closed off to the cat. This will keep the cat away from them entirely. The constant stalking that the cat may be doing to the birds could stress them out significantly and also may frustrate your cat. Sorry I don't have an easy solution for you here. Best of luck! Veterinarians have known for years that non-stick, & other coated pans, when over heated, can off gas & produce fumes. Birds have such rapid respirations that they are uniquely sensitive to these gases. This is the reason canaries were used in coal mines as early detectors of carbon monoxide. It may not have been carbon monoxide, but one of the pans probably did produce a gas that killed your birds. I am very sorry.
