My african gray is sick with a runny nose and cant breath cant get to a vet what can i give him at home to help him

Unfortunately, there are no OTC medications that can safely be given to Little Gray. His symptoms may indicate a respiratory infection which will need antibiotics. These are by prescription only. See your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian for an exam and definitive diagnosis. In the meantime, keep him warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the vet. You can supplement fluids with unflavored PediaLyte to treat or prevent minor dehydration.

If Grey has a respiratory infection, he will need supportive care and antibiotics. Unfortunately, we are prohibited legally from recommending doses for those medications in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (Veterinarian-Patient-Client Relationship). You should keep him warm and stress free. Keep his nose clear of discharge and make sure he keeps eating. He should be eating an appropriate handfeeding formula. If you have no experience hand feeding, talk to local breeders if possible or someone with more experience. Improper handfeeding can cause aspiration pneumonia or even death. If possible, phone a nearby veterinarian for more information.

Thanks for reaching out about Noel. The possibilities probably fall into three categories: infection, inflammation (allergies), or a nasal/sinus foreign body. Infections can range from bacterial to fungal. Allergy-like inflammation can be caused by dust or other small particles (including feather dander). Foreign bodies such as pieces of feathers, seed hulls, etc. can also get lodged in the nostrils. Vitamin A deficiencies can lead to inflamed nostrils, more prone to infections and inflammation. Try placing Noel in the steamy bathroom for a steam treatment. This can last for 10-15 minutes, a few times daily. If the condition continues, a visit to the avian veterinarian is needed. Good luck.

A runny nose can be due to multiple causes including bacterial/fungal/viral upper respiratory infections, nasal foreign bodies, vitamin A deficiencies, toxic exposures and others. Provide exposure to the steamy bathroom for 5-10 minutes to moisturize nasal passages. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. I'm sorry to hear Frank isn't doing well, and by the symptoms you mentioned it sounds as if he's pretty ill. You mentioned you don't have a vet nearby, but if you can find any vet that may see him at all, that is best. There isn't much you can do at home without knowing the cause. You can try moving him to a hospital cage away from other birds that is kept warm and with easy access to food and water, however if he is having trouble breathing, gasping for air, or sneezing uncontrollably, seeking vet care is needed.

Thanks for reaching out about Pearl. It is illegal to recommend or prescribe any medications without seeing a patient, so that is not possible. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give comfort. Removing perches and providing a soft towel on which to stand will require less energy expenditure. Maybe a dog/cat veterinary can at least provide some antibiotics or consult with another veterinarian. There is a fair chance this is not bacterial in nature, including metabolic (liver, renal), ingested toxins (plants, metals), other. Good luck.
