She may be having an allergic reaction, which causes the edema, or swelling you're seeing in the legs. If she's not lame, you can give her time, with walking and cold water hosing. If the swelling persists, she probably needs steroids instead of bute and I recommend a visit to your vet for a full exam and bloodwork as well.

Hello. Your horse is severely underweight. It is important to go slow trying to put weight back on her. She should have access to pasture & a good prairie grass hay all day. If you did not worm her using ivermectin, that is what I would recommend ( Ivermectin Gold so you also get tapeworms ). I would normally recommend the Panacur Power Pack, but she may be too debilitated to use this now. Maybe in a couple of months come back with this. There is no one way to prevent colic or laminitis. Access to hay, controlling parasites, controlled access to concentrates ( grain, especially the sweet feeds ), and limited access to high energy feeds like corn & alfalfa should keep her healthy, but horses are horses & you cannot control everything. And do have a veterinarian come out & check her vitals, teeth, pull blood for a Coggins & update all necessary vaccinations. With all four feet involved at some point laminitis is likely. Quarter horses tend to get heavy and are prone to laminitis. I would reduce or eliminate grain from Harley's diet and you can feed soaked plain beet pulp with a small amount of low carbohydrate pellets if you need to supplement him. Keeping him off lush pasture or only having him turned out for a short time will help also. Many horses get mild laminitis without long term problems. Weight loss is crucial as well as changing from rich feeds. Your farrier will be able to give you an opinion about the lameness also particularly about the feet. I'd keep an eye on Bud for now. Most bog spavin heals without treatment, and horses only become lame if the condition is caused by stress. If it's caused by an accident, the bog spavin resolves as soon as the joint heals. If the joint stays inflamed and the swelling is hard and tense, or he does become lame, then yes I would call the vet to come and see him. Rest him for now to allow him to heal. I hope this helps!

Without seeing what you are referring to it makes it hard to give advice but based on your description I would say he likely has cellulitis and probably needs antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the swelling and completely clear his condition. Based on your description it sounds like Colin may have suffered a puncture wound with something in his rear end. The lump you are seeing could either be some purulent fluid building up inside, or it could be a foreign object that is still inside (whatever it was that caused the puncture). If you are feeling significant amounts of heat emanating from the affected area, it is likely there is an infection brewing. The area may have to be lanced, drained, and then the horse treated with systemic antibiotics. The dragging of the left toe is hopefully not related to an ascending infection to a joint, but instead I hope it is just from a generalized pain from whatever Colin is feeling. If you have some bute or banamine around the house, I would consider using some until you can get a vet out to come and check things out. Hope this helps!
