It is possible we could be taking in my friends two parakeets. Where do I start? I want to know how to care for them properly before possible owning them. Do you have any tips, tricks, must know things?
Parakeets, also called Budgerigars, are small members of the parrot family and they can become good mimics. The average adult size is 7 inches long, head to end of tail. The average life span is between 10 to 20 years with proper care. A well-balanced Parakeet diet consists of: Specialized pellets should make up 60-70% of diet, fresh vegetables and fruits and small amounts of fortified seeds Clean, fresh, filtered, chlorine-free water, changed daily. Do not feed birds: avocado, fruit seeds, chocolate, caffeine or alcohol; it can cause serious medical conditions. Avoid sugar and high fat treats. Things to remember when feeding your Parakeet: Fresh food and water should always be available. Vegetables and fruits not eaten within a few hours should be discarded. Remember, treats should not exceed 10% of total food intake. Housing Parakeets acclimate well to average household temperatures, not to exceed 80°F; be cautious of extreme temperature changes. Hey is there any spray to keep my birds feathers healthy please suggest?
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. If birds are healthy, there are no sprays that should be applied to their feathers. In fact, some sprays found online or in pet stores can be harmful to birds, either to their skin or their lungs. If you believe there is a problem with your bird's feathers, I recommend contacting your primary veterinarian who takes care of him to see if he needs to be seen in person for an exam. If he has something like mites that are causing him to itch, he may require specific treatment. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with your budgie!

This could be due to an infection, to Polyfolliculitis which can cause itch, or nutritional imbalances. Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease due to a viral infection, Feathers mites, lice or ringworm must be ruled out first. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. My Rosa Bourke has yellow flaky beak, flaky cere and dry flaky feet with mild bumblefoot. He suffered an injury between his nostrils and is currently on the process of healing. He is in a seed based diet. I also don't know the sex of the bird.
Ideally, Pebbles should be examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet to diagnose and treat any infection or injury. The bumblefoot and cere injury may require antibiotics. Mites and other infection should be ruled out as potential causes for the flakiness. An unbalanced diet may also be a contributing factor. A commercial pelleted diet, such as Harrison's, Lafeber, Pretty Bird or KayTee Exact, supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables with limited seed is recommended over an all seed diet. The male Rosa Bourke will have a distinct blue band or tint on the cere as well as a distinctly pink colored throat. DNA sexing can also be done to definitively determine gender.
