Is Merrick dog food quality still good after Purina's acquisition?
Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. In my opinion, Purina is not a terrible food and I include that in my list of food recommendations. If Rex has been doing ok on the food for a while now with no problems, then I would keep him on the same food. I would consider switching only if he begins to have problems with digestion. If you want to change food brands, I also recommend Science Diet, Royal Canin or Natural Balance. I hope this helps! Best affordable dry food for my adult American Staffordshire Terriers?
Hello. You have quite a very handsome group of pups! The best dog foods most vets will recommend are those made by Purina, Hill's Science Diet & Royal Canin. I personally feed mine Purina One True Instincts. These may not be the very cheapest foods out there, but they are definitely more reasonable than the incredibly high priced boutique foods which are no better than the basics. Is Mera dog dry food a good and healthy choice for my dog's diet?
Hello, this seems to be a food made in Germany. I would read the product label to ensure it meets the minimum requirements set by AAFCO for dry dog food either for maintenance or for growth. As long as the product bag states thats it meets these requirements, then it it a good dog food. There are plenty of brands that are formulated to feed the AAFCO requirements. Some are more expensive and perhaps of better quality if they are made with specific ingredients. Some lower cost brands can be made with by-products or meals which are likely of lesser quality. Should I switch my overweight dog from Merrick to Royal Canin?
Royal Canin is an excellent food, and I highly recommend it. I strongly urge the switch especially if the Merricks is grain free. There is a suspected link between grain free diets and an increase in dilated cardiomyopathy. The FDA is now investigating this link, and it looks like grain free diets are not good for dogs. Grains are good for dogs, and the grain free food is a fad. If you do switch food, you have to do it slowly to avoid GI upset. Start by mixing together 75% old food and 25% new food, and feed that for a couple of days. Then do 50% old and 50% new. Again feed for a couple of days, and then feed them 25% old and 75% old. After feeding that for another couple of days, you can feed them the new food only. In terms of your dog being overweight, feed according to the package instructions on the bag of food, no treats, and exercise daily. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
