Heartgard plus is a prescription only medication, so you need to get a script from Akita's vet in order to get it. You can call and ask them to write a script for it if she's been seen by the vet within in the last year. Otherwise, you will have to make an appointment.

Congratulations on your new dog! I like Revolution if you are looking for a topical product. It consistently works well and is well tolerated. If you like the idea of an oral product better, I like Trifexis (it’s another all in one product). Sometimes though the pets can smell the Trifexis and they won’t eat it. In that instance, I like Simparica and Interceptor. My personal preference is oral products. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

If you have proof that the dogs have a current negative heartworm test (current means a test within the last year) then you can get the product at any one of our VETCO vaccination clinics. If you do not have proof of a negative heartworm test, you can get the test done at the clinic and then you can buy the Interceptor (or any type of heartworm prevention). Did you mean Pyrantel? Yes, it's ok to give pyrantel along with her normal heartworm prevention. make sure to have her stool checked again after treatment to be sure the infection is cleared. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Side effects are generally very rare in heartworm preventative medications, but are certainly possible. I have attached a handout below that discusses the different heartworm preventative products. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=488 As you can see, there are a huge number of products on the market. Some herding breed dogs (such as Blue Heelers and Australian Cattle dogs) will be sensitive to ivermectin (the active ingredient in Heartgard), so I would discuss your other heartworm preventative options with your veterinarian. I have been very pleased with Interceptor or Sentinel for herding breed dogs. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.
