Thank you for submitting your question and congratulations on your first dog! Treats should not comprise more than 10% of the diet. They should be given in small amounts. If you are giving Milk Bones, by the tiny size and only give several a day. Most dogs in this country are overweight. Being strict with his diet from the start with help to prevent this from occurring with him. As far as the best chew, it is based on the individual dog. The chew needs to be something he enjoys, but more importantly something he cannot break pieces off and swallow. This can become a surgery to remove. I hope this information helps!

Which chew bones are safe for dogs to digest? Rawhide, antlers, pig ears?

My personal preference is compressed rawhide (not regular rawhide). Pig ears and Nylabones are OK too. Any of these types of treats you give them should only be given supervised. The key to doing treats while a dog is on an elimination diet is to use treats that have the same ingredients as the food you are trying. Sometimes the easiest way to do this is to use canned food of the variety and flavor that you are using to put in a Kong or bake into treats. Other options would be to use sweet potato chews if the food you are feeding has sweet potatoes in it (which Zignature kangaroo does not) or giving dehydrated chews that are the same meat source that you are feeding (which will be a challenge for a kangaroo food).
