Why are my young guinea pigs constantly hungry? Are they growing?

I do not think the pellets are bad but should be given in moderation. These are high in fat and can cause obesity. I recommend a large amount of roughage like Timothy hay all day long with moderate amount of veggies and small amount of pellets. The roughage is really good for their teeth too.

It sounds like the larger pig is getting more of the food you put in the enclosure and as a result one is growing too quickly and one may not be growing enough. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to separate the pigs when you are feeding them pellets or treats. You can leave the hay in the enclosure while they are together. Hello! First off, Japan is absolutely adorable. :) I recommend that guinea pigs eat approximately 80% of their diet in hay. This is important because they need to grind their teeth and eat a lot of fiber to be healthy! Hi there! Guinea pigs really like their veggies and pellets, so your guy may be starting to want those more often instead of hay. However, Guinea pigs really need to be eating hay as the main staple of their diet. This makes sure their gastrointestinal tract is always active and working. Try to continue to offer your pig hay and very small amounts of the other stuff. He also needs to have a vitamin C supplement in the diet. If your pig isn't eating much though in general, my biggest concern is always checking the teeth (which should be done a couple of times a year anyway by a veterinarian who is skilled at treating Guinea pigs), and also making sure the pig isn't bloated. Guinea pigs can also colic and have issues with the gastrointestinal tract not moving at an appropriate pace. I would monitor your pig for another 12 hours and if he is not improving, I'd take him in to see his veterinarian to insure nothing serious is going on.

your guinea pig may not be used to eating so much fresh veg and greens. Keep offering her fresh grass, lettuce, a little piece of cucumber or apple. Do not put large amounts in the cage. Make sure you feed proper guinea pig food and offer the fresh food as a treat. This will make it more desirable and eventually she will eat more.

Thanks for reaching out about Felipe. Guinea pigs are constant grazers, continuously eating. When you gave him the carrots, you provided a positive reinforcement for a behavior (climbing on the cage). Now when climbing on the cage, he expects a treat. Try letting him out and using the carrot treat for a behavior you want to train, such as sitting in your lap. Good luck.
