Why is my Syrian hamster drinking and peeing so much? Is he sick?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 3 days old | 0.22 lbs

My syrian hamster has been drinking and urinating alot more for the past week. Is he okay? He is about 4 months old.

This usually isn't normal. He could have a urinary tract infection, diabetes or other type of problem. I would have your vet take a look at him. Since he is so small I want to make sure he isn't going to become dehydrated. If something is causing him to drink a lot then chances are his body isn't able to keep up with his hydration. Your vet will be able to do an exam, assess hduration, and do blood work if needed. I hope this helps!

These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infections and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian unfortunately is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.

Diabetes can start at any age, but this is not the only possibility, it could be a urine infection or a kidney disease. I would recommend taking Rick to the vet for a checkup, maybe a course of antibiotics can help if an infection is suspected.

My hamster is drinking lots of water. Should I be concerned?

Short answer yes. Hamsters may suffer from a condition called “wet tail” which usually manifest itself with watery stools. Because their body doesn't absorb water properly they tend to drink a lot. This condition is usually fatal if not treated ASAP. Of course there could be many more reasons for a hamster to suddenly drink more (like change of food or kidney problems) but “wet tail” is the most common condition to cause this symptom. I would advice to take him to the vet, the sooner the better. Food luck!

Why is my 2-year-old hamster drinking his pee and peeing in water?

Hi there! I'm so sorry to hear about Cupcake's troubles. Syrian hamsters are considered geriatric at 2 years of age. They can develop kidney issues or other illnesses that may make them sick. He may be displaying the odd behavior because he isn't feeling well. I would take him in to see a veterinarian who handles and treats hamsters to see if he needs medical attention. You can also try the water bottle again and maybe get a smaller on that he can't use to climb out of his cage. Or reinforce the cage in that area to make it harder for him to escape. Best of luck!

Anytime an animal has a change in appetite or thirst and is acting lethargic, I recommend a physical exam from a veterinarian. Increased thirst may be a sign of an endocrine disorder, kidney disease, or a reproductive tract disease. Lethargy and inactivity is often a sign of pain and feeling ill. I hope this is helpful. Why is my hamster lying on side, shaking, and biting? Vet needed?

I am so sorry to hear that tour Syrian hamster is not well. It sounds like he is possibly in pain and may have an infection. Unfortunately with prey animal species like hamsters, they do not tend to show signs of being unwell until they are actually very sick. They tend to hide signs their body is not well longer, then other species. For this reason I would advise taking your hamster to your veterinarian. It is very likely they will be able to provide medication, such as antibiotics to try to help him recover. The vet will also be able to provide medication for pain relief and healing. If your mouse drinks a lot of water, it will pee a lot. This could be caused by heat, but also by diseases like diabetes and kidney disease. Your veterinarian can do a blood test to check for these diseases and treat them if they are not too advanced.

A veterinary visit is needed to arrive at a diagnosis and proceed with a treatment plan. If kidney disease, try offering water with a syringe, but if a bladder stone, this could make things worse.
