How to safely remove severe matted fur from my rabbit's ears?

It's best not to risk cutting her with scissors if it's close to the skin like this. It will likely grow out, but may continue to get knotted. The best way to completely remove these mats is to use electric clippers. You can get these at the pet store, or take her to a groomer or vet to have it clipped. Please don’t use scissors to trim the fur since it’s easy to cut the ear flap by mistake. I recommend taking him to PetCo where the groomer can take clippers and go down the ear from top to bottom and shave off the fur. Once it’s short and growing in if you comb or brush the fur it should not get tangled into these pads of fur. I am sorry to hear about Miles. Depending on how soiled he is, this may require taking him to the vet to remove the soiled hair by clipping. I wouldn't recommend doing this at home because rabbit skin is very thin and easy to cut. If the soiled area is not large then soaking his bottom in warm water and a mild shampoo like puppy shamoo then using a comb to comb the soiled area out and being sure to dry the area well may work.

If it is truly just matted fur with normal skin underneath, you can use clippers with a very short (40) blade close to the skin to remove the mats. If he won't tolerate this should be able to find a groomer who will clip cats. If the skin underneath the mat does not look normal you should see a veterinarian: sometimes mats can form over a skin mass or infection.

Hi, good for you for noticing the problem. You can flush out the bunny's ear safely by using a saline solution, like eye wash. Squirt a few drops into his ear and massage the base of it, then let him shake his head to remove debris.Them once it it moist, carefully use Q tips to remove any stuck debris. Be careful not to push any back into the ear canal. You may need to flush it a few times to get it all out. Some bunnies need to have their ears cleaned regularly. If you notice any smell, redness or pus like discharge, take him to a vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Matts can be very painful to a cat, and if Buttons gets upset when you try to pull the hair apart or comb it, I would not do that anymore. Likely these matts will need to be shaved out. You can take her into the groomer to get that done, or if you have pet clippers, you can do it yourself at home. I do recommend having a groomer do it, however, as cats sometimes don't like being shaved and a groomer would have more experience on how to do it without stressing her out.
