Can I make safe homemade shampoo for my ferret? What's the recipe?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Generally, rabbits keep themselves pretty clean so you shouldn't be bathing too frequently. However, if you do need to bathe her, you can use Kaytee Squeaky Clean Critter shampoo. This is fine to use as an over the counter product specifically for rabbits.

If they are sick, it would be best to wait until they recover before bathing them. The stress could make their illness worse. What you can do is use a pet wipe or plain, unscented baby wipe to "spot clean" them.

Unfortunately, the coconut oil will do nothing to kill or control fleas. There are products for cats that can be used but it would be "off label". You would need to confirm dosing with your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating ferrets before application. These products include Revolution, Advantage or Program. You can bathe Bootsie in warm water with a few drops of Dawn dish liquid. A fine toothed comb can be used afterwards to remove dead or dying fleas. Vacuum everywhere Bootsie has been and wash all bedding. A ferret safe area treatment should be used to prevent reinfestation.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach! Making your own shampoo May be difficult. Baking soda will not cause kidney failure but using improper ratios of ingredients could harm the skin. I would lean towards getting a shampoo such as Duoxo Calm for a maintenance shampoo. This particular shampoo will help strengthen the skin to keep it well hydrated and to prevent dandruff and itching secondary to dry skin. A small amount of baby shampoo should be fine for a one time cleaning of your guinea pig. The water should be warm but not hot, like it would be for bathing a baby. You want to be sure that your guinea pig is dried thoroughly after the bath and is in an area that is not drafty as the big risk with bathing can be getting chilled afterwards when they are wet.

For medicated shampoos, twice a week is usually enough, so I would call your vet to ask if there is a particular reason they recommended daily. There may be something about their skin condition that requires it. As far as the conzol, applying it as prescribed should be fine.
