Is it safe to feed guinea pig pellets past their best by date?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old

A little while ago I bought a big bag of pellets for my guinea pigs, 10 lbs. Now there is still quite a bit left but the best by date says 05/15/2019, which is coming soon. Is it okay to still give them the pellets even after the best by date?

I would recommend getting fresh food for the guinea pigs, and not buying such large quantities. Also be sure to provide another source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is required for guinea pigs, however it often is only present in very fresh pellets. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/guinea-pigs-feeding
