My rabbit is scratching. How do I treat fleas safely in my home?

No you can't use any of the things you have suggested, this won't solve a flea problem. there is no natural/home remedies alternative to flea treatment, none of the ones you will find suggested will work. a cheap and effective flea treatment i recommend for rabbits is Advantage spot on.

There are not specific products for rabbits. Only certain cat products can be used on rabbits and it requires precise dosing based upon the body weight. You are correct that Theo could get fleas from being outside, and yes there are rabbit safe flea medications to prevent this. Advantage and Revolution are both safe to use on rabbits, and you can pick some up from your vet's office. They will be able to tell you the correct dose for Theo's weight :-)

The best flea / mite treatment and preventative in my opinion for rabbits Revolution, which is a prescription product marketed for cats and dogs. Typically, in a small Lionhead rabbit, you should use the smallest size of Revolution available, which is designed for kittens under 5 lbs. Hope this helps.

Hello. Parasites are any organisms that live on the body & can cause irritation, infection, or other disease. Fleas, ticks, mites & lice live on the outside of the body. Parasitic worms, coccidia, giardia & others are parasites that can cause diarrhea, weight loss, bleeding & other problems inside the body, primarily in the intestines. Treatment depends on what you have. The easiest way to approach this is to take Bun Bun to your vet for a thorough exam of the outside for skin parasites, & then a stool check to see what parasites may be present in the intestines. Advantage treatment is a good start. If your kitty has flea allergies it is necessary to keep fleas from biting her. So: Unfortunately fleas only hop on the body of your pet when they want to feed, then they hop off again and stay in your pet's environment. So you need to treat all pets in the household as well as the environment (which contains the fleas, their eggs and larvae). Flea treatment:  1) Get some flea medication such as a Flea spray or a spot on from a pet shop or your veterinarian (Advantage is fine) and apply monthly 2) get flea powder, put some in your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum your house and furniture and also non-carpeted areas frequently to remove flea larvae and eggs which live off house dust. Dispose of the bag in the trash outside. Hot-wash all the pet's bedding, If you do this diligently for a few months you will get rid of the fleas.

If you're unsure of the type of parasite causing issues for Theodore, it is best to seek veterinary care to have any of the mites/bites examined and parasite type found. There are safe topical flea medications available for rabbits through your vet such as advantage and revolution that can help prevent fleas and mites, and your vet can also use a special type of lamp to check the area for ringworm. If you do see fleas, you can use a fine-toothed comb and a gentle bath with Dawn dish soap to kill/suffocate fleas and safely remove them without chemicals.
