My rabbit is losing fur, getting thin, and has red pee. Vet visit?

It definitely sounds like something serious is going on with Bun Bun. If his appetite is still good and his stools are normal but he is losing weight I would be concerned with either intestinal parasites or cancer causing him to get a lack of nutrients. This would explain the hairloss as well. I would recommend taking Bun Bun to your veterinarian to be examined. Your vetnwill most likely want to run some blood work and possibly do X-rays as well. This photo looks like an appropriate amount of hair for a rabbit to shed, but most people don’t see it because rabbits are so good at grooming. Usually when it is seen, it indicates that the rabbit isn’t grooming appropriately, which may be the case for Poe too. I would recommend a veterinary visit for Poe, and would recommend considering radiographs (x-rays) and blood work. At his age he may have the start of arthritis or another disease that may affect his mobility or the way he feels. Here are some things that may be causing the hair loss: * barbering (chewing the hair) * mites * ringworm * normal shedding * fleas Those are the most common reasons but there are many others. It could be infection or inflammation. Clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, water bottle and hides. Replace the bedding and clean daily to keep the cage as dry as possible. If Sosow is licking or chewing at his leg, you will need to place a small e-collar (cone) on him and have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits to diagnose and treat infection or inflammation.

What a cute bunny! From the photo the area on the skin looks as though it has healed- if there is a defect in the skin itself then an exam by the vet is recommended as he may need antibiotics. I cannot see any redness to his eyes in this photo, so I am not sure if you mean that his eye color is red or if he has red eye lids or the white of his eyes look red. If he is rubbing at his eyes/blinking alot, has excess tears or a green or yellow discharge from the eyes these would be cause for a vet exam as well. If he is not acting lethargic and is eating/drinking I would monitor the urine for a few days- if he becomes lethargic/is straining to pee/stops eating or drinking or the urine continues to look red then an exam is recommended.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria but mites and fungal infections are possible as well). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Unspayed female rabbits are at a very high risk of cancer of the uterus, so I would be very worried about that as a possibility for the weight loss. The muddy urine could also be due to high calcium in her diet leading to calcium build-up in the urine. This can cause rabbits to have sludgy urine. It is important to get this checked right away. Your vet will try to empty out the bladder, increase the fluid intake, and get a better diet that is lower in calcium. I would suggest having her seen by your vet and discuss her diet, get a urine sample, and check out her uterus. Best of luck with Ms. Bunny.
