My rabbit's nail broke. Should I use Neosporin or see a vet?

Ouch, poor Thumper! His nail may have caught on something and gotten torn. This is very painful, and the remaining quick and nail bed can be susceptible to infection. Thumper may be chewing at his foot for either reason. I recommend having him seen by a vet, to make sure his foot otherwise seems ok, ensure there is no infection developing, and get him put on appropriate pain medication. You can have his nails trimmed at that time as well - nails often get torn if they are getting too long, so your vet can help trim those down if you haven't been trimming them yourself. You should take Hops to the vet as this is likely to get infected, she will need a course of antibiotics as well as pain killers for a few days, the tip of the broken nail will need to be checked as well, in some cases it is necessary to remove the nail in order to prevent any complications.

Be careful with topical antibiotics as several can cause serious intestinal problems when ingested. Wound should be sutured by a veterinarian, pain medications and antibiotics administered. Males need to be separates as they will fight for territory and often bite the scrotal area. Good luck.

Even though a picture of the wound itself would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). An immediate check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. You can apply a topical antibiotic ointment/cream to it daily. If it does not appear to be healing well after 7 days then you should take Bun Bun to the vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Unfortunately without a picture, I cannot tell you what the scratch is. Also, I am not sure what body part an "eat" is. In general, if the scratch is no longer bleeding, you can monitor it before taking Bun Bun into the veterinarian. You do need to monitor the area closely, however, for redness, swelling, discharge that is white, clear, or green in color, and pain. If any of these occur, a visit to your veterinarian is indicated as these can all be signs of infection. Infections often require treatment with antibiotics, and pain relieving medications. Please do not administer any antibiotics or pain medications that you have at home, as many of these can hurt rabbits due to their specialized gastrointestinal tracts (stomach and intestines). I am unable to tell you specifics on costs for a veterinary visit, but I would recommend that you call the veterinarian's office and you can ask for their office call fee to get an estimate. Thanks for reaching out about Lola and including a photo. This does appear to be sore hocks. Do not use Neosporin as if ingested can seriously affect the normal gastrointestinal flora. If is tender, try pure aloe vera. Good anti-effective and anti-inflammatory effects and okay if ingested. If seems painful, a veterinary visit is recommended.
