My rabbit has a bleeding bald spot from brushing. What should I do?

Hello, and thanks for your question. Ouch, poor Razz! From that photo it looks like Razz has a deep ulcerated wound that is likely infected. Razz should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as she likely needs to be put on antibiotics to treat that wound. I hope this helps and she feels better soon!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see the areas you described, they appear somewhat red and crusty with hair loss. This can be caused by overgrooming (can be from lack of enrichment), a skin infection (bacterial or fungal), and certain skin mites. I recommend gently clipping the fur with an electric clipper to keep it clean and improve your ability to monitor it. You can also apply some silver sulfadiazene (SSD) ointment to the area. If there is no improvement over several days, then your bunny should be seen by a vet to determine the cause. I would also separate her from any other rabbits she may be housed with as fungal infections and skin mites are contagious. I hope this helps!

Based on the photo, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at this to rule out the various possible causes. This could be a bacterial infection, fungal infection such as ringworm, etc. The veterinarian will be able to perform some additional testing and have a better look at it so that the most appropriate treatment can be recommended. It can be completely normal for a rabbit to shed. Sometimes they will shed larger amounts when scared or stressed. They can also lose fur with skin infections or mite infestations. If Bunny Boo’s skin is nice and pink and appears healthy, then she is probably having a normal amount of shedding. If her skin seems overly dry, crusty, or flakey, this could indicate a problem. You also want to watch closely to make sure there are no additional areas of baldness like around the ear. If Bunny Boo is exhibiting any of the symptoms described above, I would recommend taking her in to the vet to be checked out. She may need medication for a skin infection. I hope this helps.
