My pregnant rabbit is losing hair on her face. Is this normal?

It can be completely normal for a rabbit to shed. Sometimes they will shed larger amounts when scared or stressed. They can also lose fur with skin infections or mite infestations. If Bunny Boo’s skin is nice and pink and appears healthy, then she is probably having a normal amount of shedding. If her skin seems overly dry, crusty, or flakey, this could indicate a problem. You also want to watch closely to make sure there are no additional areas of baldness like around the ear. If Bunny Boo is exhibiting any of the symptoms described above, I would recommend taking her in to the vet to be checked out. She may need medication for a skin infection. I hope this helps. If the skin looks normal where the hair is missing then it is possible that the other bunny is pulling it out OR Snow White could be self mutilating as well. Also mites and ringworm are common in rabbits as well. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian. It is very possible that she is having a false pregnancy as you have already suggested. This process is called psuedocyesis and is very common in rabbits shortly after their pregnancy has completed. Unless you are seeing other signs of illness or she persists with this behavior for several more days, I would not seek veterinary attention at this time. Continue to make sure she is eating and drinking normal amounts and that her bowel movements look an appropriate consistency. There is a drug available to stop false pregnancies, but this is not something I would suggest using at this time. Hope this helps!

She may go off her feed or eat more, get aggressive, dig in corners or pull clumps of fur out to fortify a nest. She will build her nest and kindle where she feels most comfortable. You can use a rolled up towel or washcloth to make a border on the edge of the nest if you want. Whatever you do though, don't stress her out as this could cause her to a random the kits or worse.

First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Thanks for your question about Autumn, and thank you for the photos - they are very helpful. Rabbits can be quite varied in the way that they molt, and this may be a variation in Autumn's molt. There is also an infectious agent that can result in areas that look similar to what is occurring on Autumn's head. It is a fungal organism called dermatophytosis, or ring worm. There can be no redness, and no itching. Occasionally there is flaking like you mentioned, and often it can resolve and recur in cycles, similar to what you are describing happened to Autumn. Unfortunately, ring worm is zoonotic, which means that it can be passed from animals to humans. My recommendation would be to take Autumn to a veterinarian for evaluation. They can take samples of the hairs on Autumn's head and perform a fungal culture on them. They can also perform a thorough physical examination on Autumn to ensure that they don't find any abnormalities - the reason I bring this part up is that typically ringworm should not affect healthy individuals with a competent immune system. Until you can get Autumn to a veterinarian, I would recommend washing your hands after handling him. I hope that this gives you a place to start, and I wish you and Autumn the best.

Poor Oreo! Problems such as rubbing up against objects, allergies to food or environment, or infections of the skin from bacteria, yeast or fungus may all cause hair loss on the face and nose. If you can't figure out the cause, it is best to take Oreo into a vet for care to take a possible sample of the area. Looking in her environment for things she could be rubbing up against and removing/changing them may also help if a medical reason isn't found. A good balanced diet can also help if the skin flaking and hair loss is due to a nutrition deficit or allergy.
