My new rabbit is inactive and skittish. Is he sick or stressed?

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a parasitic infestation common in outdoor rabbits and can lead to some neurologic problems. Metabolic disorders can also lead to lethargy. Hi, It sounds like Luna may just be tired from the increased activity earlier in the day. However, if her appetite and defecation decrease or her behavior is otherwise altered, then that could certainly be a sign of illness. I think it’s fine to wait and monitor her, as long as she keeps eating and defeating nornally. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to take her in to see her veterinarian. Good luck!

Lexi is very cute! It could be she is unhappy with her new housemate, but it could also be that she isn't feeling well. Because rabbits are prey animals, they are very good at hiding illnesses to avoid being targeted by predators. Given that she is acting differently than normal, it would be best to have her seen by a vet in the next day or two for a health check. I hope this helps!

Possible causes include gastrointestinal disease (obstruction, GI stasis, infections), urinary problems (kidney/ureteral.bladder/urethral stones, infections), reproductive problems (endometrosis, neoplasia, other) and more. A veterinary visit is highly recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Monitor food and water intake, defecation and urination. If possible, offer water via a syringe. Thanks for reaching out about Hazel and including photos. She is spayed? Could be building a nest because she is uncomfortable or sick and trying to hide. Does she seem uncomfortable when you pet her/palpate her belly? Another visit to the veterinarian is recommended. Rabbits stomachs are normally very acidic and needed for digestion of hay. Giving antacids could alter the pH, complicating digestion. Providing some heat support can give some aid. Good luck.
