My rabbit is lethargic and won't wake up when touched. Is he sick?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 7 months old

He is a caged bunny. It’s been long since he’s had outside time. My bunny is eating well. Relaxing a lot. He sleeps on his side and doses off often. Now it’s starting to worry me because today when I checked, he didn’t even wake up from that relaxed position when I touched him. Instead he was dosing off. All other bunnies get right up when someone sees them sleeping. Should i be worried?

Thanks for reaching out about Snowball. This is mildly worrisome and a veterinary visit is a good idea to assess. Arthritis or spondylosis can make it difficult to stand quickly. Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a parasitic infestation common in outdoor rabbits and can lead to some neurologic problems. Metabolic disorders can also lead to lethargy. Continue to monitor for water and food intake.
Good luck.
