Can pet mice recover from Hantavirus, and is it a risk to me?

Thanks for reaching out. Mice with respiratory problems are more likely to be viral than bacterial but mycoplasma is a possibility. There are no home remedies as systemic antibiotics are needed, but if mycoplasma, cure is rare necessitating periodic antibiotic treatments. I do not recommend it. Wild mice can carry many diseases including hantavirus, leptospirosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV), Tularemia, and Salmonella. It's a very real concern with keeping these wild animals, and I highly recommend getting an exterminator in to get rid of them. I hope this helps.

What a cute little guy! Mice do get lice, and it's usually because they're in poor husbandry conditions (like being sold for food). This means your mice are likely infected with other parasites like dwarf tapeworm that definitely is zoonotic (meaning it can infect you). You should treat this little guy with Revolution for cats, which is a spot-on treatment you can get from your vet, and use it topically ever 3 weeks until the parasites are gone. Disinfect his cage and throw out all the bedding as well. If you spray the cage/furnishings with fipronil topical spray this helps kill all the eggs and disinfects the environment. Enrofloxacin would work best in these cases. Any veterinarian can diagnose and treat such a presentation, which is likely to be caused by a respiratory tract infection/inflammation. I would strongly recommend a check up at your local veterinarian.

Antibiotics can be used to treat the infection but is it difficult to determine if they are clear of the infection and the bacteria can live dormant deep in the nasal sinuses. Keep him separated, warm and as stress free as possible. Minor wounds can be cleaned with Betadine or chlorhexidine. A triple antibiotic ointment can be applied once or twice daily. Make sure he continues to eat and drink. Keep his cage clean. If he does not heal, loses his appetite or becomes lethargic then have him examined by your veterinarian. Contact the local humane society for information regarding low cost or no cost clinics and charities to help defray costs. Friends or family members can also be asked to help out if necessary.

The main stay of treatment is to keep the wound clean and dry. Make sure the bedding is cleaned regularly. With rodents, I recommend a dust free bedding called Carefresh. Rodents are very sensitive to dust in the environment. Also make sure that you are feeding a balanced diet approved for rodents and supplementing with healthy fruits and vegetables. Especially the leafy greens. Most healthy animals will be able to heal wounds on their own. Watch it every day for redness, swelling or discharge. If your mouse begins to lick at it too much, you may need to create a small cone to keep her from doing that. This is not generally a problem however. If it gets infected, there are veterinarians who treat rodents and this will generally resolve with antibiotics. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
