My male ferret can't control his bladder. Is this normal?

If this is the only sign your ferret is exhibiting this is probably normal, if your ferret also drinks a lot and urinates excessively i would recommend taking him to the vet in order to have a blood test to check him for kidney failure.

Normally these are signs of going into heat, but since your ferret is spayed it is more likely that she has a problem with her adrenal glands. This could be an adrenal tumor that is causing the signs of estrus. You will need to take Lariska to a vet, preferably one that has experience with ferrets, for an exam. Because her body thinks it is in estrus, she is peeing and pooping everywhere to spread her scent for potential mates.

Firstly, you should prevent him from drinking or licking up any more urine. A small amount will likely not harm him, but larger amounts may cause gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and diarrhea). Keep a bowl or bottle of fresh, clean water available to him at all times. If he becomes lethargic, stops eating or begins to vomit or have diarrhea then he should be examined by your veterinarian.

His wet back end can be due to diarrhea or an inability to control his bladder or bowel movements. The fact that he is dragging his feet around sounds like he may be paralyzed, but I can’t say for certain without some more information. I would be happy to do a consultation to find out more about what is going on and give you some idea about what may be causing this. If Archie isn’t your pet, I recommend letting his owner know about what is going on and having him evaluated by a vet.

I would recommend checking a urine sample to make sure there is not an infection present. It is possible the adrenal disease has caused him to drink and pee more so now that he is peeing less it seems abnormal. however anytime you have adrenal disease it is important to watch for UTIs. hope that helps

Hi there! Based on Nibbles' age and symptoms, I would recommend a vet visit for sure. Although a prolapsed rectum in much younger ferrets can be caused by infectious diarrhea, older ferrets can have other issues that are worth looking into to make sure overall health is good. Some causes for prolapse rectum aside from diarrhea could be constipation, growths inside the colon, or inflammation of the the organs of the urinary tract like the bladder or prostate. Also, be careful of recurrence and watch Nibbles closely to make sure he doesn't chew on himself if it happens again. In the meantime, if give his veterinarian a call and set up an appointment. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My first thought here is that Basil should likely be checked for intestinal parasites, especially things like coccidia. Irritable bowel disease and things like GI lymphoma are also possible but further down in the rule out list (list of potential diagnoses). These would be tested for if you fecal test for parasites were to come back completely normal. If you have changed her food, or she has developed a food allergy-this can also affect her stool. I always recommend that ferrets with diarrhea be seen by your vet-they can get very dehydrated very quickly. Make sure that she is drinking adequate amounts of fluids right now until you can get her in to be seen. I hope this helps!
